This movie's almost 10 years old, but I just saw it for the first time just a few months ago and was very impressed.

My fandoms are usually pretty static, so I've been wanting to try something that uses really dynamic source for a while. With October on the way a sci-fi horror movie seemed like the right thing at the right time. That aside, I wanted to try some new things with presentation and musicality after thinking about some of the things I learned at VVC and while doing the vidder profile series.

All of the lighting and coloring is source. I did a couple of overlays and a bit of time toggle, but that's pretty much it.

I chose the song because - hey, fun song to vid, plus the repeated chorus allowed me to interpret the lyrics in several different ways. I used some contextual clip connections for that, but I really hope it's a vid you can watch and enjoy whether you've seen the movie or not.

Thanks to geezola for her beta thoughts and to jarrow for pointing me toward the song.

I don't think with my head
but there's a couple of things
to say that should be said
Number one
loving you was fun
I'm sorry if I hurt you
Number two
it goes like this
if you listen close
you can feel my kiss

Cause I'm gone, I'm gone
you know it
you know by now
that I'm gone, I'm gone
you know it
you know by now
I'm gone

I don't take
I don't give
I don't talk to you
I don't tell you
what I feel
as if I feel
do you understand
I'm hollow

And I'm gone, I'm gone
you know it
you know by now
that I'm gone, I'm gone
you know it
you know by now
I'm gone

Hope you enjoy the vid! Thanks for watching.

Nice use of the song, man! It's so interesting - I've heard it a hundred times and never pictured it with any sci-fi meaning, but you really made it work so well and I didn't have trouble making the mental switch. Now I'll forever associate it with this vid :-)

W00t! Score! That's awesome. I was thinking you'd be all "You have desecrated my song and I hate you and everything you stand for." This is much better. Thanks for watching it - I know this is a fandom that, er, has never existed, so it's really cool that you checked it out.

Oh I really enjoyed this, you did some fantastic work here with the clips and the timing. I loved the movie, so it was really interesting to see how you worked with it here.

Wow, thanks so much. I didn't think anyone would have seen the movie. Really nice to find out otherwise! The layers of music had me pulling my hair out over pacing and timing, so I'm really glad the vid worked for you in that way!

I came for the Vin Diesel, and I stayed for the fabulous editing. You really make me want to see this movie.
bradcpubradcpu on October 5th, 2009 12:10 am (UTC)
You know, this is the only Vin Diesel movie I've ever seen. I haven't even seen the sequel to this one. But it definitely does make me want to check out his other work. Thank you very much for the compliment about the editing. :)

I'm glad you liked the vid! The movie has some really striking lighting and coloring, and I was surprised by how well-written and compelling the characters are (especially for the genre). It's also just a fun movie to watch on a Saturday night, you know?

I love Pitch Black!! Heee!
That was an awesome vid. Love the music use and song! Excellent work as always!

Hee - I have to tell you this: When geezola saw the first draft, her first comment was "You did that thing from The 6 Between Us" and pointed out the overlay at 1:16. I was like... huh. I guess I had been watching a lot of The 6 before doing this vid. :P Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed this!

Oh awesome that was really fun. And seriously angsty if I'm reading it right. I have actually never seen this movie. Maybe I'll have to give it a go soon.

It sounds like you're reading it right. :) I'm really glad you enjoyed watching it - and even more happy that it seems to have come across the right way even though you haven't seen the movie.

That was fantastic! Great song choice, love Black Lab. Fantastic editing, as always. Had me hooked from the beginning, and also especially love the editing for the whole 2nd verse. I think they're making another Riddick movie - so yay! Great video, perfect editing of clips to match the mood of the song. Loved this!
bradcpubradcpu on October 5th, 2009 02:09 pm (UTC)

That's awesome to read because I really fought with the second verse. Got stuck on it for about two weeks trying to figure out the proper pacing/motion/narrative. It's really cool that you think my editing usually works, because I'm often tearing my hair out over segments like this.

I had never heard of Black Lab until jarrow sent me the song, but I am totally hooked. It's great that they're making another Riddick movie! Now I just need to see Chronicles...

Vid wise, this shit rocks my world. Honestly. If you must know I actually downloaded the vid & went straight to the big ass telly with it without even previewing. Because in Brad, we trust. And I was highly rewarded for the aforementioned trust.

Hadn't heard the song but as per usual you completely knock it out of the park with your cuts, flow & storytelling. Sens-friggin-sational! This is a prime example of why effects are often so completely unessecary when you can make a vid this good.

And OMFG you hadn't seen Pitch Black?!? To save our friendship you must now & IMMEDIATELY seek out The Chronicles of Riddick. To completely attone, you must also make a vid out of it. ;)

Also Vin Diesel has recently gone from someone who I enjoy watching on the screen to demi-god status (and Im sure he would get a kick out of the reference) because of the following interview:
bradcpubradcpu on October 5th, 2009 02:15 pm (UTC)
Oh man I'm really glad you enjoyed this. It seriously means a lot. That's awesome that you watched it for the first time on the BA telly! Wish I could have been there! With popcorn.

Normally I'd probably use more effects with a vid of this type - even as resistant as I am to effects - but the way the movie is shot is so dynamic, with all of the heavily affected lighting and dramatic motion and source effects, that it didn't really feel like it needed any more help from me.

I will indeed seek out Chronicles of Riddick. I've been meaning to watch it since I saw Pitch Black, just haven't gotten around to it. I get the sense from the trailers and bits that I've seen that it's a completely different type of movie.

I definitely knew Vin Diesel was a gigantic geek (physically and otherwise). He has his own gaming company! Have you ever played Escape from Butcher Bay? It's one of the best games I've ever played, and he was heavily involved in the development - and his company published it.

Whoa, way cool! I was so excited to see what you could do with shiny movie source and you definitely didn't disappoint. :D It's fun, isn't it? You should vid it more often. ;)

As always I also thought you did a good job of making it pretty transparent. There definitely seemed to be more depth to the vid than I expected given the source (maybe I'm too hard on Vin Diesel, lol).

Favorite moments:
0:01 - Flashing lights over guitars.
0:31 - Crash/sparks over the subtle cymbal
0:42 - I like the sudden pickup in pace, set off by the quick head turn.
0:48 - Way cool camerawork. Must've been fun to play with. :)
0:57 - Love the shaky cam over the chorus.
0:59 - Dude, that overlay is sick!! The combination of his head movement and the lights is just wow! I kept rewinding to rewatch. Definitely one of my favorite moments in the vid.
1:24 - Cool falling thing. Musical and metaphorical. ;)
1:29 - Like the shadow across his face.
1:33 - Hee, I like the quick cuts on the uber-closeups over the guitars.
1:37 - Cymbal blood! Very nice.
1:48 - Cool shot, and I really like the jump cut.
1:52 - I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE. Very cool, and very transparent, intercutting. Another one of my favorite moments.
2:30 - Oh no, she died!! :( Very nicely executed (heh) in time with the slowdown in the music.
2:41 - Love the transition from the angsty stare in the rain to the badass head turn. It looks cool and it signals that shit's about to get real again. One of my favorite tricks, though I don't think I do it often enough.
3:24 - Very effective to cap the action off with this clip of the monster's hand, in light of the hand-holding motif you've used throughout the vid.

And cool credits! haha, I liked the little fade. :) Really awesome vid Brad, but I knew it would be. :) Do more like this! :D

I'm so glad you weren't disappointed! Your style and the process of doing your vidder profile was definitely the biggest inspiration for this. Still, I had absolutely no idea what you'd think.

It is indeed fun to use dynamic source. Wish I got inspired by it more often. I guess step No. 1 would be to watch more movies.

There definitely seemed to be more depth to the vid than I expected given the source
That's reassuring to read because that's *exactly* how the movie came across to me. I was expecting a fun little sci fi horror movie, but it had much more depth (as well as much more pretty) than I expected. I actually feel like I could do multiple character/relationship studies to it... and it's rare for me to feel that way about any movie, especially one in this genre.

Thanks so much for the timestamps! :) It helps so much to see what you (and, I'm hoping, other people) are seeing, and what stands out for someone who hasn't seen the movie.

The camerawork definitely was fun to play with - so much ext. motion. The lighting and coloring is so striking throughout as well... was very tough to not use clips strictly for the pretty.

0:59 - Dude, that overlay is sick!!
Hee. That image got stuck in my head a few months back and kind of became the foundation for the vid concept. Neat that you picked it out!

Very nicely executed (heh)
You are SICK! :) That was another of those lynchpin moments that made me *need* to do the vid, you know? I wanted to linger on it a bit more but... no... time!

I honestly didn't think anyone would pick up on the hand holding thing. VERY reassuring to see you pick that out.

Do more like this!
Oh if only.

I really appreciate you saying this DC. I'm hoping you have some idea of how much it means to me. (Hint: A lot)

I love your icon! This is definitely a movie that begs to be vidded, and I think if you're a vidder it's almost impossible to watch it and NOT want to vid it, you know? I'm really glad that you think I did it justice.

Pretty! Excellent song choice -- it sounds just like the movie looks. And you craft some excellent builds here, really listening to the music and doing what it tells you to. Excellent stuff, as always.

You're awesome and your words are awesome. Just in general, but here specifically.

it sounds just like the movie looks
Cool!! That's how I felt when jarrow sent me the song, but it's a leap from feeling that way in your head to getting it to look that way. So... yeah, very nice to read that. The builds were my favorite parts to vid because the song and source were doing all of the work, and all I had to do was sit back and throw stuff at the timeline and giggle. Always fun!

You know, it wasn't until this very moment that I realized Claudia Black was in Farscape. I just kept thinking "How come every time I mention Pitch Black on LJ people talk about Claudia Black?" Duh.

I really enjoyed this vid. One consistent transparent metaphor ftw! :D I thought the central message was flawlessly carried out and really came through from the very first viewing. I love how you utilised all the gorgeous source colours and lighting and movements, and the song worked so well with this kinetic style of editing.

Favourite moments:
Awesome opening takes you right into the guitar... um, vibrations?
0:38 - 0:40 It's really smart and subtle to have that parallel without having these clips back to back.
0:49 hee, I really dig the light on the eye at "listen". There's a little bit of tongue-in-cheek there.
0:53 "Feel my kiss" - love that tactile implication through mirrored movement.
The first chorus carries such fierce momentum throughout. It's compelling to watch.
1:27 nice on-beat flying. :D
1:31 I really dig that little flash of image there and thought you did such a great job of utilising the difficult guitars.
1:40 Love the speed change there.
1:48 Ditto here, and the blur and jump cut! I love that trick of editing and it looks so cool.
2:00 "Hollow". Another very cool lyric and music use.
2:10 Hee, love that jump cut!
I really like how the emotional attachment built up in the second chorus, leading into the seminal moment at 2:30. Added bonus for that awesome carried motion from her pulling the lever to her getting run through. Also, that's some kickass blinking on beat, Vin Diesel.
2:41 Love the important head movement and the ensuing drums! Whee! The change of heart is so transparent, especially shown through clips like the hands joining, and then him essentially fighting off himself. It creates a very strong last quarter in terms of structure and feels like a really satisfying conclusion to the vid as a whole.
bradcpubradcpu on October 8th, 2009 04:00 am (UTC)
I'm so so incredibly happy to see you describe the central themes and metaphor the way you do. Not many people were mentioning the themes, but I couldn't tell if that was because they were just obvious, or if it was because they were so opaque there didn't appear to be any theme. So it was quite a relief to read you lay out the specifics in exactly the way I was hoping they would come across!

Thanks also for the list of favorite moments. Again, it really helps to pinpoint what was working and how things looked through your eyes.

0:38 - 0:40 It's really smart and subtle to have that parallel without having these clips back to back
I waffled. In one draft they were, in the next they weren't, and so on. In the end I felt like the music was telling me to seperate them, and that I needed to trust the viewer to make the connection.

hee, I really dig the light on the eye at "listen". There's a little bit of tongue-in-cheek there
:) I wanted the strongest tie for that segment to be the scene where he beckons her "closer" to see his eyes, so that was just an extension. Plus I wanted to use it to foreshadow the same thing in verse 2.

The first chorus carries such fierce momentum throughout. It's compelling to watch
Yay! Thank you! I was desperately trying to release my inner DC there.

1:27 nice on-beat flying
Total accident.

1:40 Love the speed change there
Was hoping to make a statement about his view of religion vs. his view of drug abuse there. All very quick, though, and needed to look v. kinetic. Kind of a microcosm of my dilemma with the vid in general. Trying to say a lot really really fast.

This is the part that made me squee the hardest:
then him essentially fighting off himself
W00t! SCORE!

As always, I devour every word of your thoughts about my vids and cherish the praise like it's the voice of god. Cause to me it kinda is. (Er, thanks.)
