New vid: Man In the Box (House S3)
Pain is irrelevant. A House season 3 vid.
Length: 3:39
Song/Artist: "Man In The Box" by Alice In Chains
Warning: Medical torture, confinement

Download link coming soon

My betas, deserve more than just thanks for this vid. obsessive24 deserves all of the credit for anything that works and none of the blame for anything that doesn't. And the vid likely would not have been released at all without the input of laurashapiro.

Thanks also to milly for the vid banner and last-minute advice.

My previous two House season overviews are here:
My Little Drum (Season 1)
Vertigo (Season 2)

I was very surprised when House fired his team at the end of S3, but the more I thought about it the more sense it made.

Through House's guidance and influence, they had changed a lot over the first three years. Humanity had become less important, and they had become more withdrawn and analytical.

Foreman was aware this was happening to him, and it was the reason he wanted to leave. With Chase, Cameron, Wilson, and Cuddy it was a lot more subtle - but I also think that, on some level, they welcomed it. It was a painful process, but in the end there was less pain.

From his perspective, I honestly believe that House felt like he was rescuing them by making them more like him.

(Random side note: The day after I finished the first beta draft, I dreamed that my Dad turned into House. I'm sure a therapist would have a blast with that one.)

During the course of making the vid, I went through an identity crisis of my own; questioning my instincts, approach to structure, and how messages/narratives are sent and received through vids. I think I learned a lot about myself as a vidder, but very little of that is reflected in this vid. It'll be a process.

One of the reasons I chose the song is because the lead singer's life reminded me so much of the themes of withdrawal and emotional disconnect that I wanted to explore with the vid.

He battled drug addiction for years, eventually dying of an overdose alone and secluded in his apartment, just a few years after this song made his band a sensation. No one had seen him for months before - his friends would literally stand on the street throwing rocks at his window and get no response - and his body wasn't discovered for several days after.

i am the man in the box
buried in my shit
won't you come and save me?
save me

feed my eyes (can you sew them shut?)
jesus christ (deny your maker)
he who tries (will be wasted)
oh feed my eyes (now you've sewn them shut)

i am the dog who gets beat
shove my nose in shit
won't you come and save me?
save me

feed my eyes (can you sew them shut?)
jesus christ (deny your maker)
he who tries (will be wasted)
oh feed my eyes (now you've sewn them shut)

Hope you enjoy the vid. Please share your thoughts.

WOW. This is so freaking cool. You have an amazing ability to take a show that seems boring to vid and make it look visually beautiful and meaningful using all the POTW type shots and motion. And man this song really is so House. I love the medical cases feeding House's eyes keeping him occupied in his box, the chorus line with his eyes overlooking the white board with all the medical jargon was particularly stunning. And I didn't catch the pov shift the first time but looking at the lyrics it makes so much sense and the whole House turning the ducklings (and Cuddy and Wilson) into him is awesome. I really, really love this vid and I love that it's the kind of vid I can watch over and over again. Thanks for making and struggling past the vid hardships!

Really? :) That's cool! It seemed to me the most difficult thing was *cutting down* the number of cool shots and keeping my focus narrow and on-track. House has such insane camerawork and lush photography. Does tend to get talky at times, though.

I love the medical cases feeding House's eyes
Man, I am SO relieved that lyric tie came through.

In a bigger sense it's a relief to see how it came through to you as a whole. Schnikes there was so much angst on my end.

I really appreciate you watching it and taking the time to tell me how much you enjoyed it. It means a lot.

Wow this was one hell of a ride. I'm not familar with the show so I probably didn't get everything you tried to express but you managed to create a special atmosphere with some kind of "urgency" for lack of a better word. Your musicality is top notch as usual and your lyrics use is brilliant. Fantastic work my friend.

Wow this was one hell of a ride
That's high praise coming from you. I feel like I could say that about any of your vids.

Your reaction is *very* flattering, especially since you don't know the source. Hey, I'm flattered you even took time to watch it, considering.

shove my nose in shit
Holy shit. Best reason to wake up today. Wow. It all seems like a fucked up game where House turns everyone into his pawn, toys, and children.

I think it's interesting that you went through your identity freak out for this vid. It's a kick ass vid that works so well. The time toggles give it a heightened, unnatural, and internal feel.

I laughed at many parts because it's so House. You really captured a small part of the show that doesn't get as much attention it seems it should. You took what you had and made it even more fucked up than it was originally intended to be. Mad freaking props on that.

:09-:20s - Everything is so kinetic and energy filled. The beat of the flexing uterus (weirdest phrase I've ever typed for feedback) is so wonderful.
:37-:50s - OMG, your sense of imagery is so bright and refreshing on House.
:51-:53 - Dang, way to make a chess game look action filled.
1:14 - Extremely cool overlay-ish thing on House of the symptoms whiteboard. Skills!
1:22 - Here's the part where I laughed because House believes that he's saving them.
1:30 - And here's his little disciples.
1:52 - Good call using that kid flipping out. That one really got me.
1:59 - Ohhh, Foreman's face scrunch is used perfectly. I usually can't stand the guy, but it works.
2:42 - How he so easily throws away his toys.
2:50s - I like how hand on Cameron's shoulder turns into handing Foreman case file seconds later.
3:08-3:12 - This section is killer because the actions are so well timed and the infection(?) spreads to the three of them until it turns to...
3:13 - The three of them embracing House's teachings of questionable ethics when getting the end diagnosis justifies the cruel means. The straps tightening, Cameron cutting, Foreman holding down, House turning from the alien to Chase, and Cameron's scary frakking face. Cameron's face at 3:23 will be haunting my nightmares right next to my bandage changes, especially in conjunction with her look at 3:25 with the time toggle on her chair twirling.
3:26 - Nice use of Cuddy's ball twirling like House.
3:30 - I want to slap Cameron at 3:30. I don't even remember what her issue was with the Joel Grey patient, but she's so freaking cold when she tosses the sterile gauze at him.

Also, the recurring image of the struggling rat is so brillantly evil.

Ok, teach me your ways. You have such a freaking skill for drawing parallels within patients and other characters. It adds so much to your storytelling and meaning.

Re: shove my nose in shit
Whitney, you totally made *my* day with this. Frak. Seeing how it came through for you? So reassuring. Also, it's awesome that for just a *moment* I can see me through your eyes. I want that me.

made it even more fucked up than it was originally intended to be
I don't know, it was pretty fucked up to start with. I think it's just that it doesn't look fucked up until you look back on it. So I guess I just made the f'd-upness a little more obvious. Which is *always* a great goal in life.

The beat of the flexing uterus (weirdest phrase I've ever typed for feedback)
Ha! And who would have thought you'd use that phrase in feedback about one of *my* vids? :P

Dang, way to make a chess game look action filled
See, that was just thrown onto the timeline pretty much unedited. There's so much intense imagery in this show, and so much rich symbolism to be found.

I laughed because House believes that he's saving them
Heh. Glad the sarcasm came through there. I thought it was pretty subtle. :)

Foreman's face scrunch is used perfectly
Thanks! I knew the shot was very contextual (hugging his mom), but I was hoping it would have some impact that aside.

spreads to the three of them until it turns to...
3:13 - The three of them embracing House's teachings

NARRATIVE TRANSITION FTW!!! W00t! It worked! =) God, you have no idea how much angst and how many revisions I went through for that part. Ugh. Head hurts just thinking about it.

Ok, teach me your ways. You have such a freaking skill for drawing parallels within patients and other characters. It adds so much to your storytelling and meaning

Are you coming to VVC this (next) year? Because I so have to give you the most biggest giganticist hug after reading that. For true.

Now back to being the me that doesn't rock...

This vid = a world of Yes. The juxtaposition between House's agenda (dare I call it...his good intentions?) as you've presented it here--making better doctors out of his team and friends by making them more like him--and the emotional horror of the results of his success is just *so* well-done. I love the use of toy/game/lab rat imagery throughout, and the visual echoes once the team starts taking on House's diagnostic behaviour (ex. Cuddy with the ball/House and his cane) are *excellent*.

Yay, House vid!
bradcpubradcpu on December 29th, 2008 01:38 am (UTC)
WOW!

I really can't tell you how much it means to me to see how well all of these themes came through. Honestly? You summed up the meaning and flow of the vid a hell of a lot better than I could. Which... well, it makes me feel like I'm speaking the same language as everyone else. Which is so incredibly cathartic right now.

Thank you SO much.

Awesome!! You've managed to show everything I love about House in under 4 minutes. ^^

Season 3 was pretty intense, and you showed that perfectly here. Love how all the staff is incorporated in their own way, even Wilson, and I particularly like the House-punching-Chase scene (it's a favorite). And the chess pieces... *excellent* choices! Some seriously amazing editing, here.

Are you planning on doing all the seasons, then? If you are, can't wait for the newest ones! The most recent season is excellent so far, and season 4? Major awesomeness.

Love!

Tell me about it! Schnikes. I felt like *I* needed some Vicodin about halfway through.

I'm really flattered by your reaction to the vid. Thank you so much for sharing with me what you liked about it.

I hope to do all of the seasons. Can't wait to watch S4!

I had a very strong emotional response to this vid, which I believe is a testament to how powerful it is. However, I'm hesitant to talk about it because it was not a pleasurable emotion and I don't know if that's the kind of feedback you want. (If it is, I'm happy to talk about it with you--otherwise, I'll work through my emotions on my own!) Either way, I really want to be honest about this, especially because I know making the vid was a struggle for you. I think the vid is AMAAAAAAAZING. I believe the reason my reaction was so very strong is because you've captured the pure essence of something here. That's really admirable.

Only if you *want* to talk about it. Otherwise I'll be content with the fact that it made an impression of some sort on you (other than, "wow that was an awful vid.")

The season itself had a pretty powerful emotional impact on me, and I'm just guessing here but I feel like it might be similar to how the vid made you feel. If so, that's reassuring in that I was able to properly communicate that. I hope it didn't make you less willing to watch my vids in the future!

Oh, wow. This is really stunning. I love the way you're using the special-effects zoom-inside-the-body footage, and footage from patient POVs, to tell a story about the box House traps himself in, and the boxes each of the ducklings finds themselves in. I especially love the punch of that first clip of House popping vicodin, and the clips of House in the chapel. And House in the lit room surrounded by x-rays -- the solitariness, the obsession of that shot! And the way we return to the image of the rat, which initially had me thinking of Steve McQueen but by the end of the vid had me in a "everyone is a lab rat to House" place. This is fantastic.
bradcpubradcpu on December 29th, 2008 10:16 pm (UTC)
Thank you so much! I'm really happy with how well the metaphors like the lab rat came across to you. It's nerve-wracking to try to get across a point using so much symbolism and such, but it's so tempting because House has SO much visually intense metaphor material. You really should stop enabling my obsession with that type of approach! (except don't.)

This is wonderfully creepy and your editing is amazing. I've only seen the fourth season of House, but even without the full context the themes are really clear without being anvilicious.

Here via a rec from kiki_miserychic and DUDE this is awesome! I'm only passingly familiar with House and haven't seen most of season three, but even so it really held up well, narratively and thematically. And that's without even mentioning the amazing editing.

Thank you for posting this!

Mind-blowing work, and I have to confess that I hate House. But this video is stunning - the editing is top notch and the musicality is just perfect. I don't know what else to say, I was pretty speechless afterward. The video is powerful and draining all at the same time - it's like having a front row seat to an emotional ride. Just great work.
