Lyrics
I wish you would step back from that ledge, my friend
You could cut ties with all the lies
That you've been living in
And if you do not want to see me again

I would understand
I would understand

The angry boy, a bit too insane
Icing over a secret pain
You know you don't belong
You're the first to fight
You're way too loud
You're the flash of light
On a burial shroud
I know something's wrong
Well everyone I know has got a reason
To say
Put the past away

I wish you would step back from that ledge, my friend
You could cut ties with all the lies
That you've been living in
And if you do not want to see me again

I would understand
I would understand

Well, he's on the table
And he's gone too cold
And I do not think anyone knows
What they are doing here
And your friends have left
You've been dismissed
I never thought it would come to this
And I
I want you to know
Everyone's got to face down the demons
Maybe today
We can put the past away

I wish you would step back from that ledge, my friend
You could cut ties with all the lies
That you've been living in
And if you do not want to see me again

I would understand
I would understand
I would understand

Can you put the past away
I wish you would step back from that ledge, my friend

I would understand

Thanks for watching!

Really lovely vid! I swear, you're the only person who can make House even remotely sympathetic for me. ♥

Aw, I guess that's good! :) Thanks, Klia.

I haven't rewatched this season of House, but your vid brought it all back in a beautiful way.

There's so much context here, so it's really flattering to hear that. Thanks, Kass.

!! Seriously: !! I didn't expect to ever see another House vid from you, how cool is that! :-D

/will be back with something more coherent once I get the time to watch this a couple more times

Okay, so first I'm going to have to echo obsessive24 below, I love that this is once again totally different in song choice and atmosphere from the other four vids. And just as right for the season! I've always loved the thematic and emotional coherency of the fifth season, all those fractures running through it, and you really nailed that here.

I adore that you used so much footage from "Emancipation" as a throughline, both the kid brothers and the main case with Sofia, because yes, both really exemplified the themes of the season. The ledge image (which was used a lot by Hugh Laurie about House, especially in later seasons) has this suicidal connotation, but not just, it encompasses all the other fraught emotional decisions and places as well (e.g. Wilson, Cameron, Foreman, House himself too) and that's lovely. The way you translate the direct "you" from the lyrics into the relationships works so well, with the shots of people watching each other (Taub and Kutner, oh man; "icing over secret pain" with Cameron) and with all those moments of touching hands in the last section, but it also doubles as a "you" from us to them.

I especially love the way you included Thirteen's story, from the first "flash of light on a burial shroud/I know something's wrong" to the part from 3:10 on, which is just beautiful with the flashback moment and the little Foreman POV (while he's standing on a ledge of his own to boot), but also the moment with the syringe before, in the middle of that escalation where all those emotional fractures running through the season come to a head and erupt because people lose control of all that's been buried. LOVE.

And as always, I love how sharp your editing is, the timing and the thought going into it. So many great transitions and combinations of clips. Some examples not yet mentioned above: 1:19 to 1:23, Thirteen smiling with Kutner and then her changing expression to their discovery of him? Ouch. 1:45 to 1:51, House's demons and then the appearance of hallucination!Amber? Whee. The insertion of Amber's cup into the beginning.
Also, it's amazing how emotionally satisfying that last section/ending is, given that the season and the vid got so dark at times.

You made the season five vid of my heart and my head; thanks so much for sharing with us. <3

Wow!

You said it much better than I ever could. If I didn't know better, I'd say this came from your brain instead of mine. WOW.

both the kid brothers and the main case with Sofia, because yes, both really exemplified the themes of the season
I had finished clipping for the vid and actually went back and grabbed footage of both of those two cases after the fact when I realized their thematic relevance. Also, the final reunion scene with Sofia still makes me cry every. single. time.

has this suicidal connotation, but not just, it encompasses all the other fraught emotional decisions and places as well
That was the goal. Absolutely THRILLED to see that coming through for you!

it also doubles as a "you" from us to them
:)

Thirteen was dynamite in this season, and no one was more directly related to the main through-thread except perhaps House. Plus a lot of the footage of her plotline was so visually dynamic, with the flashbacks and the tests, and hookups, and such. I wouldn't have done this idea without her stuff.

I really appreciate you mentioning your favorite parts! That's helpful as well as reassuring.

Also, someone spotted that it was Amber's cup!

Thank you so so much for telling me so!!

I'm so very glad that you kept going with House seasonals. Every instalment adds to what has come before and I feel like it's a special pleasure to be able to see this vid as a standalone piece as well as a piece of a much larger picture. I love that the musical style is so different yet again, although it does make me wonder where you'll be going musically with the next two. XD

The things that particularly struck me upon first watch was how the lyric use changed focus/meaning every time the chorus came around. The words themselves didn't carry much of a suicidal feel for me so I thought it was really well done to have made that meaning come across so clearly in minute 2.

The use of patients to illustrate central characters has always been a hallmark of this series of vids but I think this time it was particularly clear and striking with (a) House's heartbreak at Wilson leaving and (b) the two kid brothers.

Kutner is the elephant in the room, and I think you can sense that anticipation of - when is he going to be brought into the vid, when is he going to do it - and I really liked how you started sneaking him into the background around the 1 minute mark with a very light touch, at no point are you actually in his head, and when it happens in the vid it's every bit as incomprehensible as in the show.

Moments I particularly liked -
0:47, fingers and lights
1:21, tiny jump cuts
1:50, Put the past away, so ironic. I can't remember how season 5 went in terms of any interaction between Wilson and hallucination!Amber, but here I thought it was very clear that this is the next chapter in their triangle relationship set up in So Whatcha Want.

I just went back through your House vid tag and realised that you're just like George RR Martin with these. Hope it won't be 2020 before season 6 rolls around. ;)

Yay, someone remembered the ongoing House series! One of the most appealing things about it, to me, is tackling a new type of music for each. So, yep, you can definitely count on that continuing.

Changing the meaning of repeated lyrics as the song goes on.... that's pretty much my catnip as a vidder. Glad you enjoyed that here!

Someone at VVC mentioned they were waiting for the Kutner part. I was surprised anyone still remembered, tbh. Vidding a seasonal for a long-dead show assumes a lot, I think. Again, though, reassuring.

Also, timestamps! Whee!

Honestly, I really just wanted to do this vid so I could get to the point where Hallucination!Amber is trying to convince House to kill himself. Fun stuff, that.

Ha! Well, I've already watched S6 and have a song, so let's hope not.

Thanks so much for the lovely comments, Nicky.

I don't think I managed to put across in person how much I enjoy your House vids, so I'll say it clearly here: I really like your House vids! This one continues your trend of successfully bringing all of a season's disparate elements together into a thoughtfully unified--and compact, and effective in its compaction--whole. Another very enjoyable vid! :)
bradcpubradcpu on August 14th, 2015 03:17 am (UTC)
Wow, not only flattering, but you express it so well! I honestly wasn't sure if anyone would still remember that I've been doing these. It's a really fun and interesting challenge as a vidder to go through and try to pick out the running narrative thread and then unwind it. And so rewarding to see that you're continuing to enjoy them! Thank you so much.

Oh, goodness! Makes me wish I'd never stopped watching House. :)
bradcpubradcpu on August 25th, 2015 06:16 pm (UTC)
Ha, thanks! :) This season was pretty dark, even by House standards.

Beautiful! The sense of motion is perfect; it never once felt like it was dragging. I remember season five being a hard season to watch, but this vid brings home the pathos that the show was very capable of delivering, at its best.

I thought the vid would focus mostly on Kutner, just based on the song choice, but I'm happy that you just used him as the lynchpin for the entire teams' struggles. It worked very well.

Strangely enough, I just today deleted my one House icon to make room for others. I should have waited just one more hour! Anyway, great vid! I will definitely be re-watching!

Thank you so much for the lovely thoughts about the vid! It's reassuring to think that it comes across the way you describe. Now on to season 6...
