Notes

I had just finished grabbing footage and storyboarding for a seriousface vid about how Sherlock ruins the lives of those who love him, when my son took an interest and told me he wanted to learn how to vid. So I showed him the basics of my editing program, pulled in a few clips that I was planning to use for the Sherlock vid, and left him sitting at the computer with headphones on.

I wasn't expecting him to actually edit anything! But a couple hours later he came out and said he finished part of it and wanted to show me. He had pulled in his favorite track from a Kidz Bop CD and turned my emo clips into a joyful affirmation full of metaphors and explosions.

I took a cue from what he had (including much of the first chorus) and expanded it out into a full vid, trying to teach him a bit more about how and why I do specific things as we went.

He's on his... fourth vid since then, I believe. It's pretty normal now for him to get up in the morning, go straight to the computer, put on the headphones and open up the timeline.

I may have edited most of this version of the vid, but it definitely feels like him - the way he is all the time. He's gotten me through some pretty rough times, turning my emo into smiles. He's my little firework.

Lyrics:

Do you ever feel like a plastic bag
drifting through the wind, wanting to start again?
Do you ever feel, feel so paper-thin
like a house of cards, one blow from caving in?

Do you ever feel already buried deep
six feet under screams but no one seems to hear a thing
Do you know that there's still a chance for you
cause there's a spark in you

You've just gotta ignite the light and let it shine
Just own the night like the Fourth of July

(Chorus)
Cause baby you're a firework
Come on let your colors burst
Make'em go oh-oh-oh
as you shoot across the sky-y-y
Cause baby you're a firework
Come on let your colors burst
Make'em go oh-oh-oh
you're gonna leave'em falling down oh-oh

You don't have to feel like a waste of space
You're original, cannot be replaced
If you only knew what the future holds
after a hurricane comes a rainbow
Maybe the reason why all the doors are closed
is you could open one that leads you to the perfect road
like a lightning bolt, your heart will glow
and when it's time you'll know

(Chorus)

Boom boom boom
Even brighter than the moon moon moon

Thanks for watching!

That was gorgeous! The way you did the final sequence gave it such a wonderfully epic feel!

Thanks so much, GK! The part Ollie did early on was such an inspiration.

I love this. Ollie shows much promise which isn't surprising, but must be a joy to you. Great use of the slowmo from the source.

Aw, thanks. I'll pass along the compliment. He is definitely a joy to me, in lots of ways. Yeah, the slowmo was a lot of fun to use in this context.

I wanted to say that I thought this was an awesome pimptastic vid - this is not my Holmes, but wow, was I sucked in; I couldn't take my eyes off them! Which is what fireworks do, so well done!
bradcpu: Serenitybradcpu on August 18th, 2013 01:16 pm (UTC)
That's so flattering, thank you! It's not my Holmes either, which I guess is one of the reasons it's easy to make something like this with it. Those movies are very firework-like. Really glad you liked it.

I had never watched them either! They sure seemed to fit Ollie's idea, though. I'm so glad you enjoyed this! (By the way, Blow opened the Glitterguts themed show here, and I'm told it was one of the better shows at the con. Wish I could have been there, but I was giving a presentation at a panel at the same time!)

This is completely delightful!

Please tell Ollie that I love the way he set up the vid, and that his dad did okay with his parts too. I hope that we will get to see more from him. :)

Oh I'll tell him! And I'll let you know what he says.

This vid is so delightful! You and Ollie both did a wonderful job. Tell him that shows so much promise and that I can't wait to see what else he comes up with!

That was pretty awesome. I love your use of the slow motion scenes!
bradcpu: Serenitybradcpu on August 20th, 2013 03:40 pm (UTC)
Glad you liked it! There's slow motion everywhere in those movies, and that's tough to resist for a vid like this.

Who knew I'd ever enjoy a vid set to Kidz Bop. Ollie is quite the little vidder (I really enjoyed the first chorus - and the rest of the vid too, of course)! Can't wait to see what the two of you do next. :)
bradcpu: Serenitybradcpu on August 22nd, 2013 09:19 pm (UTC)
The little guy grinned when I read this comment to him. He's watched your Spidey vids since he was like 5 (which is probably part of why he wanted to start vidding). So thanks from both of us.

I think it's splendid that your son is vidding! The concept is a delight! This is such a joyful look at both movies and I love that first chorus.
bradcpu: Serenitybradcpu on August 25th, 2013 11:29 pm (UTC)
Thanks! I was very proud of him. Just a few minutes ago he came up to me and said "want to do a little vidding?" I don't think there's any turning it off at this point.

Aw, thank you so much! I honestly don't remember when it played, but it's reassuring to hear that it came across well!

Awww Sherlock and Watson! I love the beautiful use of motion and color in this while still showing off the warmer, inspiring moments of Sherlock and Watson. I love the use of the credits and the dancing of course :)

You're so nice. :) Really glad you liked this. All the things you're mentioning here are things the boy led me toward. It was hard not to have fun.
