Download the M4V

I had watched a few episodes of Doctor Who before, but none really hooked me until the S7 premiere, "Asylum of the Daleks," I guess in part because I knew that the guest actress would be returning as the full-time companion so that added another layer to everything that was going on. Something about the concept of the episode just grabbed me - I'm pretty much a sucker for triumph-of-human-nature themes. Plus, it was gorgeous.

So for the vid I just tried to give a broader context to the episode's themes of humans and Daleks, the history there, the Daleks' past attempts to use the human body in one way or another, and the role the Doctor's companions have played in that. I went through every Dalek-related ep from the new Who for that and ended up with waaaaay more footage than I could have possibly used in five vids. Also discovered along the way that this show is pretty good (!) and has had some really memorable characters and actors.

Thanks very much to milly for the constant encouragement and beta thoughts, and for not complaining when I watched the show over her shoulder.

I ain't happy, I'm feeling glad
I got sunshine, in a bag
I'm useless, but not for long
The future is coming on

Finally, someone let me out of my cage
Now, time for me is nothing cause I'm counting no age
Nah, I couldn't be there, now you shouldn't be scared
I'm good at repairs (s'all simple), and I'm under each snare
Intangible, bet you didn't think so I command you to
Panoramic view, look, I'll make it all manageable
Pick and choose, sit and lose, all you different crews
Chicks and dudes, who you think is really kicking tunes
Picture you getting down in a picture tube
Like you lit the fuse, you think it's fictional?
Mystical? Maybe, spiritual
Hero who appears in you to clear your view when you're too crazy
Lifeless to know the definition for what life is
Priceless to you because I put you on the hype shit
You like it? Gunsmokin', righteous with one toke
Psychic among those, possess you with one go

The essence, the basics, without it you make it
Allow me to make this, childlike in nature
Rhythm, you have it or you don't that's a fallacy
I'm in them, every sprouting tree, every child o' peace
Every cloud and sea, you see with your eyes
I see destruction and demise, corruption in disguise
From this fucking enterprise, now I'm sucked into your lies
Through Russel, not his muscles, but the percussion he provides
With me as a guide, y'all can see me now cuz you don't see with your eye
You perceive with your mind
That's the inner, so I'mma stick around with Russ and be a mentor
Bust a few rhymes so motherfuckers remember
Where the thought is, I brought all this
So you can survive when law is lawless
Feelings, sensations that you thought was dead
No squealing, remember: that it's all in your head

I mean, thanks for watching!

OH MY GOD. THIS IS AMAZING. I am so so excited to see you vid this show, here's hoping this won't be the last! Absolutely amazing work here - I love the editing style and the integration of all of the different Dalek stories, which made them feel much more seamless and integrated than they seem in the original canon! I love this A LOT - purplefringe and I just watched together in stunned silence and then made a lot of flaily hand gestures.

WOW thank you SO much!! I felt really guilty being so excited about what comes next on the show at the same time that everyone was so upset over the Ponds leaving (and *just* when I discovered them!) So I wanted to share a little of that excitement. :) The show is so pretty - especially the recent seasons - and so full of great imagery for vidding. I'm kicking myself for not getting into it sooner. So yeah, I definitely hope this won't be the last for me. Happy to finally be on board!

I love the jigsaw puzzle of story threads you put together to make such an epic vid. Of course, the editing is fabulous and I love the way you used the lyrics and music.
bradcpubradcpu on September 30th, 2012 05:17 pm (UTC)
Thanks, you. There was... a lot of footage and a lot of threads, so it was a lot to wrangle. Very cool to see you describe the outcome that way.

I. Love. This.

I adore the concept. The Doctor and the Daleks, a perennial theme, but here you're interested in companions, and that just makes it all so much more real for me. More human.

I don't even have words for how awesome the ending is: all the sacrifices the companions have made to battle the Daleks, aligning that with Oswin's sacrifice, and then you slyly address the camera just as she does: "the future is coming on," the future in which she is a companion. It all just comes together so beautifully.

Your visual work is stellar as ever. All the circles in the beginning, all the twirly people in the middle, always going back to the Dalek's eye. We are inside the eye of Oswin, and it's amazing.

Have I mentioned that I'm THRILLED that you are watching and vidding Doctor Who? ::SQUEAL::
bradcpubradcpu on September 30th, 2012 08:49 pm (UTC)
That Nine icon just never fails to make me giddy! As do your very kind words.

I'm so happy you like this! From my very limited experience with the show, the companion seems to be the character through which we see the Doctor's world(s), so that really made Oswin's story seem so much more powerful to me. I guess that's why I sort of flipped for the character - that and the way she always seems to be the one in charge, even when she's not.

SO relieved that the ending came through the way you're describing!! Especially this:

"the future is coming on," the future in which she is a companion
!!! I love that it's just the beginning. There's so much to look forward to, and that feeling is the one I have as a new Who fan. The companions' stories in general have been stories of sacrifice and heartbreak, but also of triumph. It's thrilling to imagine what's next. It's like there's this whole universe out there, and now I'm ready to discover it with Oswin.

And I *have* to keep vidding it, if for no other reason than because there was just so much I didn't have time or room to say in this vid. And sooo much pretty. God this is a pretty show.

this was mind-blowing! The musically in the bridge is perfect. I love the circles theme in the beginning, and especially how you essentially start the the vid with Rose Tyler touching the lone dalek (which is really a weird inversion to Oswin's story).

with Rose Tyler touching the lone dalek (which is really a weird inversion to Oswin's story)
I'm so glad you caught that, and that you thought so! Seeing that scene for the first time AFTER watching Asylum of the Daleks, I was thinking about Oswin's storyline the whole time. The whole Daleks-using-humans thing keeps coming back again and again. (I actually used Mickey's hand touching the Dalek capsule at the end of that sequence, instead of Rose's.) Anyway, I ramble! Thanks for letting me know you liked it.

Ok, so as such_heights has already said - the two of us flailed A LOT over this! In fact we watched it twice through in quick succession, and then flailed some more. Visually it's STUNNING - I love the way you use all the circles, all the iconic Dalek design imagery, and how it's cut *so* sharply to the beat. I love how it focusses on the gloriousness that is Oswin, whilst seamlessly bringing in so many other charaters, from Harriet Jones to Gwen and Ianto. It's this beautifully tight, meta-y vid, and yet is also emotional and just oh my god have I mentioned that I love it? I feel like I need to watch it about eleventy billion more times to get all the layers out of it. And I might just retire from vidding myself...!

Heh, I was so giddy reading her description of your reactions, but this is even better! Thank you so so much! Was super worried the whole time that I wouldn't be able to blend all of the characters and episodes in a cohesive way and that it would just come out looking like a big WTF. Very reassuring to read how you saw it!

So cool that you caught Ianto!!

This is a frigging awesome video, seriously. I love it. Also, you gave me a new remix of an old favorite song to listen to, so I thank you so much for that. I have it on repeat right now. Mind if I share it on my Tumblr (noregrets-notears-noanxieties)? I can link back to this post if you want.

Here via laurashapiro, and I'm so glad! This is really gorgeous, and very thinky. I'll be rewatching and pondering for a while.

It's also a great distraction from the Pond!angst, and a reminder of why we all love this show.

So glad you came over, and liked it! Yeah, I felt really bad about being so excited about what's next (as a new Who fan) when so much of the fandom was imploding over the Ponds' fate. Weirdly? I'm kind of looking forward to being part of all the angst the next time such a thing happens.

I've been trying to think of something insightful to say since I watched it about five minutes after you posted it, but I think I need to accept that all I'm capable of articulating are flaily arm gestures of my amazement. This is SO COOL. *FLAIL*

Flaily arm gestures are a valid comment! Preferred, even. :) I'm really flattered.
