Ah, You Tube
I joined You Tube a few months back and uploaded (among other things) Living Dead Girl, after dozens of people had downloaded it from my site, uploaded it to YT, and took credit for it over the past several years (with everywhere from 500 views to 3,000 views to 17,000 views. So today I get this gem of a reply to my upload of Living Dead Girl on You Tube:

"@bradcpuvids How could you have made this? I watched this on here like...2 years before you posted it haha"

sigh. Oh, You Tube.

Rarely have I seen such an appropriate icon.

Oh man!! That had to sting. Rahhh! >:( I totally hate youtube for crap like that. I had someone leave an asshat comment like that to me on my Kermit Bale vid and I was like o_O!

It's sad because even as a vidder if you try to avoid putting your vids youtube, they end up there inevitably. I try to just go there from the start, but they still seem to get ripped off and uploaded again by random people. You can't win. :\

Yeah, I know just what you mean.

I actually joined YT way back in late 2007 and uploaded Living Dead Girl (around the same time as some of these other people), but my account was deleted and my email address was banned for copyright infringement. And yet these other people not only didn't get banned, they still have my vid on their page all these years later.

Just comes with the territory as a vidder, I suppose. It usually doesn't upset me. If they need praise so badly they're willing to take empty credit for someone's work, then they obviously need it worse than I do. But that comment was just so incredibly ironic today. Wow.

Oh man...i kinda hate youtube culture and then i feel guilty for hating it :)
bradcpubradcpu on July 24th, 2010 12:55 am (UTC)
Heh, well I think it's more about individuals than the culture as a whole. The problem is that there are just *so many* people some times it feels like the Wild West.

I think that qualifies as an epic eyeroll.

LOL! And, aww, thanks for the comment. :) I have a voucher! The person actually replied and basically reversed course.

...How could you be posting about this vid now? My friend made it, like, 3 years ago haha.
bradcpubradcpu on July 24th, 2010 03:01 pm (UTC)
LOL totes. I keep trying to track the creative rights in my head - source artists/creators, vidder, youtuber, vidder... then I get confused and need to lie down.
gwyneth: stabbity guy tribadesgwyn_r on July 24th, 2010 01:26 am (UTC)
Oh God. Urge to kill would be overwhelming.
bradcpubradcpu on July 24th, 2010 03:03 pm (UTC)
ICON! =)

It's such a bizarre situation because as a vidder I have no rights anyway, but wow. This whole thing is kind of like the really bitter cherry on top.
the sundance kid: bored now / whatevermresundance on July 24th, 2010 03:09 am (UTC)
Oh man, ouch. This is kinda why I've always kept a presence on youtube (aside from the fact that it's very accessible and easy to use). I can kinda keep tabs on MY vids that way - not that I am too precious about it, mind. But yeah. That's just saaaad.
bradcpubradcpu on July 24th, 2010 03:05 pm (UTC)
Yeah, as I was telling Ferd, I created a YT account back in late 2007 and uploaded Living Dead Girl (around the same time as these other people), and within a few weeks my account was deleted and my email address was banned for copyright infringement. And yet so many of the other people who uploaded *my* vid not only got to keep their account, they still have my vid uploaded all these years later.

I realize that as a vidder I really have no legal rights, but this whole situation is just such a gut punch.

"haha"

Indeed, YouTube in a nutshell.
bradcpubradcpu on July 24th, 2010 03:06 pm (UTC)
It's so funny, like watching through the bars at the zoo. Less funny when you get thrown into the cage with them. :P
laurashapiro on July 24th, 2010 03:33 am (UTC)
So annoying. But I don't know, you could make lemonade by reading the bazillion comments the vid has already received -- or just be delighted that it's been seen 17,000 times! I'd love to make a vid that popular, even if I wasn't getting credit for it.
bradcpubradcpu on July 24th, 2010 03:07 pm (UTC)
Oh, I do! I mean, I have. For years that has been my approach. It's just that this comment was so spectacularly ironic that it just stung a bit, and then came the sighing.

Any chance you can email those users and ask them to take the vid down since you have your own account now and it's uploaded there? Who knows if they'll listen but it's worth a shot.

But yeah, that's annoying.
bradcpubradcpu on July 24th, 2010 03:08 pm (UTC)
I've tried contacting some of those users before. They don't reply. And then if I comment on the vid, they delete my comment or just turn off comments altogether.

Gah - sums up Youtube to a T. Happened to me on a Buffy NING group too.

I caved and put a random selection on there a couple of years ago, much a case of can't beat 'em, join 'em. Seeing as most of my vids were on youtube - either in pieces, with different soundtracks or just the whole vids, I thought I might as well.
bradcpubradcpu on July 24th, 2010 03:10 pm (UTC)

That's the same reason I joined YT again recently (well... that, and the fact that the quality is much better now than it was in 2007, when I originally joined.)

I usually don't mind at all that I have virtually no rights or control over my vids as a creator, but this comment was just kind of an "ouch" moment.

Apparently when you post something online it's no longer yours o.O

I actually laughed out loud.

LOL, true! And usually I don't mind that. But sometimes I just have to sigh and shake my head.
