This is absolutely amazing. I love the focus on Cara, and the ship. It's just brilliant and love this song. :)

I've never seen this show before, but your vid is absolutely GORGEOUS. I love all the visual details in it, and it just flows and moves beautifully. (And what a perfect song choice!) The tension between the two women builds so well that that final shot of her glancing away just about broke my heart. Really lovely.

Re: pointed in this direction by <lj user="meiou_set">
I'm thrilled that you were able to get so much out of it, not knowing the show! Legend of the Seeker gives you a lot to work with as a vidder, both in terms of being very visual and offering a relationship with some emotional weight, so it makes life easy. But it's still incredibly reassuring to see that it came across so well to someone who doesn't know the source. Thank you so much for taking the time to tell me so.

It was bizarre to spend so much time trying to tone down the sex metaphors.

(snerk) The books are so much worse. When I heard they were turning the SoT series into a TV show, I was really skeptical. You would not believe how much sleaze they removed from this story. It was as if they gave the first two books stupidosuction to remove the trashy-stupid and then filled it back up with some Xena-style silly-stupid.
bradcpu: Coffee!bradcpu on March 13th, 2010 04:25 pm (UTC)
I've never read the books, but the TV show is the perfect mix of visual crack and emotional weight for me, so I'll stick with that. :)

This is lovely, Brad. I love (of course) all the amazingly surrealist imagery, and for my lack of knowledge of what's going on, I thought Cara's emotional journey was really transparent. There's a fantastic sense of mixing the actual narrative with metaphorical throughout.

Favourite moments:
0:07 slow wings on beat. Awesome.
0:19 ahh so cool!
0:30 I just love the timing on this and how you addressed that staccato drum machine beat. Oh, and how the clouds in the background felt like the synth.

Cara is amazingly pretty in that dress which reminds me of Tara's in Once More With Feeling. Better than even the leather, I'd say!

Verse 1: Even without context I can see her current steelyness versus what she was like as a child, and a little bit of hinting of what made her that way. And I love that grabbing part in the chorus showing how she was forced/descended into it.

1:37 of course. I love that you made that moment really last, and for us to really wait for the blood drop to happen. (Or maybe it's because I'm familiar with the song and was just holding out for that? Dunno.)

V2: Love the blood on the flower versus the blood on the leg.

Again, this segment is so transparent with Kahlan gradually breaking down the barriers. The arm grab at 2:01 and flower at 2:04 especially. And I also love the Kahlan = sun, Cara = storm thing you've got going on here. It all builds really neatly into -

2:23 what a revelatory moment, leading straight into Kahlan's "betrayal"! Masterfully carried out. Love all the subsequent moments where she's being the third wheel between K and Richard.

Lovely quiet fire segment punctured by 2:57. You can really feel the breakdown here. That rat-nibbling-at-toes moment is fantastic for that. You can totally pinpoint the moment that Kahlan melts. And then 3:20 with the glorious light and childhood image is just beautiful.

But it doesn't last and you can see the shadows crossing the white roses and the blood wilting them because of the actual Richard/Kahlan and the metaphorical Kahlan stabbing Cara. You know how difficult it is sometimes to distinguish the vidder's intent to use metaphor versus intent to use context, and I think it worked really well here. And it culminates in Kahlan-as-white rose, which is just a fantastic, fantastic visual parallel/metaphor, which I think is really pushed by the use of that motiony blur on Kahlan. Love it as effectively the ending image, with the very Faith-like coda.

The emotional weight is very transparent and I can only imagine how it looks to someone with more context than me. Well done!

You are just so awesome for taking the time to leave such amazing feedback right away! I didn't expect anything from you for a while because I know how slammed you've been lately, but I was dying to know what you would think of this one. Unexpected, but an incredibly nice surprise. Bonus: You actually liked it!

You know how difficult it is sometimes to distinguish the vidder's intent to use metaphor versus intent to use context, and I think it worked really well here.
This is enormously reassuring. The source is basically a metaphor factory, so it was so tempting on that front. But as you said, that can be a pretty noose. I was trying to focus here on one central metaphor (the rose), which is more or less built into the source, and kind of building off of that. Maybe that's a lesson to take forward?

So do you see now why I called this the Seeker version of Creep? Still waiting for someone to call me on remaking the same vid. :P

Whee! Timestamps! I'm loving that several of the things you timestamped were mostly placed for context/weight as opposed to visual/musical weight, but that they held up so well in the latter category for you.

LOL, I hadn't noticed the similarity between Cara's dress and Tara's. You're totally right! But, yeah, she's pretty in just about anything.

Geeking out that you caught the parallel between the blood-on-flower and blood-on-leg. Was kind of trying to dance around that and hope it would settle in subconsciously.

Love all the subsequent moments where she's being the third wheel between K and Richard
Those are the exact words I used when describing the point of the segment to Kim. Squee!

You can really feel the breakdown here. That rat-nibbling-at-toes moment is fantastic for that. You can totally pinpoint the moment that Kahlan melts.
All leaning very heavily on source and context, but it's so neat that it comes through so clearly for you without context. I was really worried people wouldn't even be able to see the rat.

And did I mention thank you for the song? The first time I heard it, a lot of this vid popped into my head. It was just *so* perfect! I never would have come up with something that good on my own.

HOLY CRAP BRAD, THIS IS MADE OF WIN WITH WHIPPED CREAM AND A CHERRY ON TOP.

No joke. I watched the streaming version three times in a row while waiting for the vid to download. The use of source footage, timing, and use of movement is breathtaking and pitch perfect in every single frame. So, so, so beautiful and it is Cara to a "t" on so many levels, exposing her incredible vulnerability underneath her hard exterior. She is a very delicate character in some ways - perhaps more so than the others - because she has locked herself away from her humanity and her feelings for so long. Her rediscovery of these things has been part of what has made season 2 so incredibly rewarding and this vid captures her journey with great depth and respect for her.

The way you build her relationship with Kahlan - straight out of canon - is really intriguing and beautiful.

And in the end, when it all tumbles into that powerful death/rebirth imagery and metaphors - it took me awhile to get that - but the minute I did I literally sat up in my chair and said: "Holy shit Brad!" to the universe in general. :D That is certainly, for me, the heart of this vid and easily one of the most terrific vid moments of all time for me. Seriously. That shit PWNS me, utterly.

Please be submitting this for Nearly New? Please? Cuz I must see this on a big screen. :D

I'm so glad you liked it! The fandom - and especially you - was so welcoming and the show and characters were just so great... I wanted to do it justice, you know? It almost feels like it's all too good to vid!

She is a very delicate character in some ways - perhaps more so than the others - because she has locked herself away from her humanity and her feelings for so long
THIS! This is exactly what I find so compelling about the character. She's such a rock that when those little cracks show it just... I don't know, it just tears me up. I wanted to dive into that for this vid and explore it.

I literally sat up in my chair and said: "Holy shit Brad!" to the universe in general.
LOL! That's awesome. Wish I could have been there! You'll have to do a re-enactment for me at VVC. :) Seriously, I am beyond flattered.

I was indeed planning to submit it for Nearly New. Hopefully people don't get sick of Seeker at the show!

Yaaaaaaaaaaay!

This was delicious. I only know bare minimum about LOTS but this (combined with your continuing squee) makes me desperate to give it a chance. I admit, most of the allure is Cara--I love characters like this. And the FEMSLASH! Waaaaant.

But the best thing about this vid? The editing. You used this song to full effect, here, and the timing of the scenes to the beat and sound of the song--it rolls with the characters, instead of fighting against them. Great work.

Awesome! I'm so glad you watched it and liked it despite not being into the show (aside from my squee, heh). Cara is a really amazing character - right up there with the best I've ever seen - and, yeah, her relationship with Kahlan is really dynamic and just impossible to *not watch*.

Thanks for the compliments about the editing. :) I was really desperate to do justice to the source.
