God, this show. This fandom! How is either one real?? It's so amazing in so many ways - all of the pretty and the fun and the slow motion Epicness, and all of the fans squeeing themselves into oblivion. I'm kicking myself for not getting into it sooner.

I started watching Seeker in season 2, not long after Cara showed up. I loved all of the crack to bits, but what really hooked me on the show was Cara's slow process of rediscovering her own humanity, largely through Kahlan. This vid's about that journey through the first half of S2, and the down side of Cara opening herself up to emotions again.

The relationship feels like a romantic one to me, at least in a certain way. I'm not trying to go AU with the vid, just trying to present Cara and her canon ship with Kahlan exactly as I see it in the show. More specifically, I'm trying to show how I think Cara has come to see herself (and how she's come to see Kahlan), in a way that Cara would never admit.

I think it's funny that I had to avoid using some of the most memorable C/K scenes because they don't really fit in a vid like this. It was bizarre to spend so much time trying to tone down the sex metaphors. I mean, Cara fights using a magic phallus, and Kahlan turns people into mindless love slaves by touching them and staring into their eyes. This show!

Thanks to milly for the gorgeous banner, to obsessive24 for pointing me toward the song, and to my entire friends list for enduring my squeesplosion over this show. For those of you who haven't seen the show, hopefully the vid will give you some idea of what I've been so excited about.

Random thing: The night I finished and uploaded the vid there was a massive electrical storm here, and it hasn't stopped raining in the three days since.

Even more random thing: I'm way too amused by the fact that Legend of the Seeker + Sneaker Pimps = Legend of the Sneaker (spoilers). Did I mention the part where this fandom is insane?

"Lightning Field" by Sneaker Pimps

Strike me down, give me everything you've got
Strike me down, I'll be everything I'm not
Count the questions on one hand
You don't ask me what I've planned
Strike me down, should have asked me what went wrong
Strike me down, should have stayed away too long

Should have stayed away too long

Strike me down, give it everything you've got
Chance me now, I'll be everything I'm not
Hope's the child of what luck brings
Points to faith in higher things
Ask me now, fire at everything at once
Strike me down, take it any way you want

Take it any way you want

Strike me down, should have left it all unknown
Strike me down, should have held it all alone
Wash the questions off my hands
I'm the fate in no one's plans
Strike me down, give it everything you've got
Strike me down, I'll be everything I'm not

I'll be everything I'm not

Hope you enjoy the vid. Please share your thoughts.

doccy and me haven't seen the second season yet, we're waiting so we can just marathon it, so I've been trying to avoid all LotS stuff. And I totally just snapped like a twig. AND I REGRET NOTHING.

*cuddles vid* Beautiful! I loved the pacing and the musicality and the motion .. the flash backs that I have no context for whatsoever, but were powerful just the same. And I adore the Khalan / Rose shot right at the end <3 <3 <3

Haha, happy to spoil you! Hopefully it was just nonsensical enough that you'll still be surprised when you see the scenes in context. It's been an amazing season.

Thank you about the structure. :) I was really hoping it would have some kind of at least tech/visual appeal if you didn't have much context, you know? Glad you were weak and watched it!

HOLY. AAAAAAAAAAH. I need to watch this a million more times. WOW! How amazing are you?! I got completely choked up by how much of an unspoken voice you gave to Cara's emotions. I mean, it felt like longing. Like she wants to be Kahlan, or be with her, or maybe it doesn't matter, she just wants to be around her. And all the white flower footage and the red blood/red leather going on and that amazing time remapping and OH GOD Cara sitting across the fire from Kahlan watching her sleep. I love you for making their relationship more than just super sexy. Whee, the .avi's dl'd now, off to rewatch in greater detail!

YAY! You weren't disappointed! This fandom and these characters are so incredible that I almost feel like it's too sacred to vid, you know? And then with all the expectations... So, yeah, relieved.

I got completely choked up by how much of an unspoken voice you gave to Cara's emotions. I mean, it felt like longing.
I love the way you say it. I need to get you to write my vid descriptions.

But yeah, Cara's emotions do have such a huge presence in their unspoken-ness in the show. That's a big part of why I love the character so much. Those little cracks where you can see how much is boiling under the surface... it's just so powerful.

I do think Cara has fallen into a really painful kind of love with Kahlan, as she starts to open herself up to human emotions again and starts to see life in a different way, and ... yeah, it's painful. Awesomely painful.

So glad you liked it deej! Not sure if I mentioned that part.

This is just stunning - and really even more than a 'ship vid I think it's a great look at Cara generally.
bradcpubradcpu on March 12th, 2010 04:16 pm (UTC)
Thank you so much! Personally, I've always had to present 'ship studies from such a one-sided POV that they kind of border on character studies. Which is frustrating at times in how it limits me, but I'm glad it seems to work in this case.

Thank you so much! I'm really glad the visual themes you're describing came through. Wasn't sure if people would make those connections. Very cool that they did.

Squeesplosion is the only thing I could come up with to describe my reaction to this show. I mean srsly.

That was an incredibly poignant and powerful vid! Fantastic editing and I think you really got everything you wanted to present through the video. I love, love, love it! :D I've read the books and obviously K/C don't necessarily work there, but the show presents a completely different story between K/C that I cannot tear myself from. <3 I started watching Seeker about when Cara showed up to. If it weren't for her, I highly doubt I'd give the show a second glance.

Wow, reading your reaction to it is so satisfying. Thank you so much for the reassurance.

That's exactly how I feel. The way it comes across in the show is so unique and powerful. I'm not sure if that's because of the writers or the cast or some combination, but for whatever reason it's just a Big Thing about the TV show. Maybe the biggest thing? I've told all of my friends to start watching with S2. They rarely listen to me, though. :P

I really liked the rhythm of this, all the internal motion and the sense of overlapping waves. It's a beautiful show and you really made me feel the Kahlan/Cara tension.
bradcpu: Kahlan lightningbradcpu on March 12th, 2010 07:52 pm (UTC)
Thanks so much about the rhythm. The song was so interesting to explore, in so many ways. I had to keep trying to not say *too much*, you know? Just let the thing flow. With the pretty and the power of the source, it almost vids itself if you let it. Really glad you enjoyed it.

I absolutely freaked out when I saw this- I've been watching for it ever since you mentioned you were making it. And-

Oh my God. You have somehow encompassed every little aspect of Cara, every part of who she was and is and everything she thinks she has no hope to be. Her desire to belong because she has been robbed of her individuality, her loathing of her own flaws of weakness and fear- and the way Kahlan with her beautiful white dress and the love of her life and the destructive imperfection underneath brings out the best in Cara.

Perfect vidding, friend. You have inspired me.

See, you say it much better than I can. A lot of times I vid something like this in part because I have so much trouble expressing it in words.

I'm really beside myself that you enjoyed it so much. It's lovely that we're part of such a creative community and can draw inspiration from each other.

You have inspired me
That's the best thing I've read all day. Seriously.

Holy cow. I have never seen this show, so I can't comment from that perspective, but this vid is really awesome. It's gorgeous and the movement is so beautifully cut, and the tension is so strong that I was literally holding my breath in parts. I love the way you've shown us the fraught relationship between these two women--it really gelled for me at 2:57, after we've seen the blonde's jealousy and then the brunette looks at her like she's really seeing her, and then there's lots of kink imagery. (Um. And they tell me this is a show for kids?!?) Beautiful work!

Re: here via giandujakiss
"Um. And they tell me this is a show for kids?!?"

Noo. Whoever "they" are, they're incorrect. Yes, it's a sometimes goofy fluffy fantasy show, which means it has elements commonly associated with kiddie programming, but the content is really not appropriate for kids, IMO. Not less than teens at least. Lots of sexual or sexualized content, lots of torture, lots of skin, lots of heavy emotional themes, lots of non-ha-ha death, lots of people making seriously morally dark choices.

I'm not trying to say the show is Shakespeare, but its not for kids, no.

Oh, my goodness. I had to watch it twice to get all the nuances, and I still feel like there is more to discover with this! You never fail to impress me with your vids, but this is AMAZING. I haven't even see any of the second season, so I have only clues as to what is happening, but WOW. Glorious.
bradcpu: Confess mebradcpu on March 13th, 2010 01:12 am (UTC)
Wow, your reaction is so humbling. Really. I love the show and the characters to pieces, so it was really tough to tell how objectively "good" it was, you know? Whether anyone would be affected other than me. Thank you so much.

Yeah, the second season? I kinda like it.
Dualbunny: Kara - :Ddualbunny on March 12th, 2010 05:51 pm (UTC)
Oh, *Cara*. And, PRETTY. The birds in particular kept giving me chills in the first half, and the time toggles toward the end were especially fantastic. And emotionally it was, imo, a pitch perfect recreation of the state that Cara's in right now. ::loves::
bradcpu: Confess mebradcpu on March 13th, 2010 01:16 am (UTC)
Hee, thanks about the birds. The song sounds so ominous, so I wanted images that matched (and, you know, *meant* something). "Oh, Cara" is right on the mark. That should have been the vid summary. Your reaction means so so much to me, as you probably know. Thank you for not crushing my tiny ego like an itty bitty bug. :)
