"So What'cha Want" by The Beastie Boys

Well just plug me in just like I was Eddie Harris
You're eating crazy cheese like you would think I'm from Paris
You think I get fly, you know I get high
You know that I'm gone and Imma tell you all why
So tell me who are you dissing
Maybe I'm missing
The reason that you're smiling or wilding, so listen
In my head I just wanna take'em down
Imagination set loose and I'm gonna shake'em down
Let it fall like a mudslide
When I get off I like to ride and glide
I got depth of perception in my text y'all
I get props at my mention cause I vex y'all
So whatcha whatcha whatcha want?
You're so funny with the money that you flaunt
I said where'd you get your information from, huh?
You think that you can front when revelation comes?

Yeah, you can't front on that

Well they call me Mike D the ever lovin man
I'm like Spoonie G yeah I'm the metro politician
You scream and you holla 'bout my Chevy Impala
but the sweat is getting wetter in the ring around your collar
Like a dream I'm flowing without no stopping
Sweeter than a cherry pie with ready-whip topping
From mic to mic, kicking it wall to wall
Well I'll be calling out you people like a casting call
Well it's wack when you're jacked in the back of my ride
With your know, with your flow, when you're out getting by
Believe me, what you see is what you get
and you see me, I'm coming off as you can bet
Well I think I'm losing my mind this time
This time I'm losing my mind
That's right said I think I'm losing my mind this time
This time I'm losing my mind

Yeah, you can't front on that

So whatcha whatcha whatcha want?

Absolutely amazing. You managed to pack SO MUCH into this. It's stunning.

Wow, thanks so much! I'm really glad you enjoyed it.

Oh, *very nice*. I love how this vid really is a concise encapsulation of the season's narrative: just like the season, you start off with the very broad fellowship competition, then narrow the focus down to tell the Amber/Wilson/House story. Only, what seemed (to me, anyway) an almost scattershot progression in the show itself becomes a very tightly coherent narrative in the vid. Score one for having to tell a complete story (or two or three) in under three minutes! *g*

And, as usual, *great* music/visual matchups. I especially liked the impact of...well, the impact of the truck on Amber, and the pulling-apart of House and Amber's hands, and--of course--matching Amber's mouth to the lyrics on that last "What'cha want?" And the way you used Taub and his wife and the Jewish wedding ceremony to parallel Wilson and Amber is *excellent*. And and and...

...yeah. *g* So good!

That was definitely the goal, so it's really reassuring that it came through so well. :) I've been trying to sort of get the pulse of the season and characters and flow of emotion with each of these House vids, and what you're describing here is exactly how the season felt to me. My influence as a vidder is just about trying to highlight (what I feel to be) the heart of the season's message/theme.

And the way you used Taub and his wife and the Jewish wedding ceremony to parallel Wilson and Amber is *excellent*.
I'm so glad someone caught that! Feared it wouldn't be transparent enough.

I'm very happy that the you enjoyed the musicality! This was my firs time vidding rap and, wow... rap to a talky face drama? Maybe not the best decision I've ever made. But it was big with the challenging. So yeah, I really appreciate your comments on that front!

This is fantastic. I love the intro, and how everyone is reacting to the music and the stagger steps. The initial breadth of it is gorgeous, but it narrows down beautifully from the standard professional/medical stress to something so much more intimate, 13 as she starts to fall apart, things turning personal for everyone. I love how at the half-way mark, all these diffuse seasonal storyline narrow down into sharp relief in relation to the stories of the characters and fellows -- the rock climber falling as Amber falls away,

I think my favourite part is at 1:30, as Amber sits down on the bus and the lock on the car door slams locked, because they're all locked in. It's illustrated beautifully in the "Think I'm losing my mind this time" segment that comes after. This time, House is losing something, destroying something, momentous.

I love the musicality of all of it, of course, but my favourite bits are the Amber/truck impact at 1:52 and the repeated hands pulling apart.

It really means a lot to me that you enjoyed this so much, Cherry. Thank you, seriously.

13 as she starts to fall apart, things turning personal for everyone
Whee! It worked! :)

Wow. You're all insightful and stuff. I was trying to get across a feeling of picking up emotional momentum during the Amber/Wilson/House part and sort of tailspinning toward the crash, and it certainly sounds like it came across that way. House is always so eager to try to analyze everyone around him... not so much himself.

Re: The hands pulling apart on the bus - if you slow it down to about 20% (in source), you can actually see House open his hand and let go of her, but I didn't want to take it into such drastic slow motion to show that. Thought it would be better to kind of let that register on a subconscious level.

I do not watch House, but I do love me some Anne Dudek and, therefore, have enjoyed the crop of S4 vids. THIS...I've been literally watching it over and over for about a half hour now. It's amazing. Like really incredible EVERYTHING about it. Wow.
bradcpu: Futurama Fox Boxbradcpu on February 28th, 2010 05:47 pm (UTC)
I have to admit I've never seen Anne Dudek in anything else, but she was awesome in this season. I love House, obviously, but that aside it's more than worth watching season 4 alone if you love Anne Dudek. She kind of owns it... and it was the writer's strike season, so it's only like 14 eps.

Also I'm kind of FREAKING OUT that you liked the vid so much. :) Especially since you don't know the show.

I have to say, I melted a little when I saw your replies this morning *and* the rec. Holy wow. It's a bit overwhelming. I hope you enjoyed the vids half as much as I've enjoyed your reaction to them.

Oh God, I was waiting for this, and I knew the wait was worth it!! I'm incoherent with love right now. You managed to pack so much story that this season contained in less than 4 minutes, and boy, it really works. Amazing song choice, too.

My favorite part was when the bus hit--killer editing/timing right there. The parallels, and the tight narration, and the House/Wilson/Amber arc, and the OMG, I love it all. Very awesome, well done! :D
bradcpu: freaking!!!bradcpu on February 28th, 2010 05:54 pm (UTC)
So glad it didn't disappoint! I was kind of cringing a little that you were looking forward to it cause - yikes - not good with expectations.

I admit, at times I kind of regretted choosing a rap song for a talky face drama. Was quite the challenge, what with all the motion you have to have - it really limits clip choice. But I just found the lyrics and flow of the song so inspiring when matched up w/the season.

Thanks so much for telling me you liked it! Hope I can keep not disappointing. ;)

I was in love with "vertigo" but this is just the best ever ! i love your perfect and brilliant editing, every clip is put where it belong, nothing more nothing less, it's just perfect.
I vid House since 1 year and i can't get enough so please make more House !!!!

Wow. I'm a sitting here floored and I don't know why that surprises me, but it does. This is incredibly well edited. I've vidded to The Beastie Boys before and I know how hard it is to keep up the movement and momentum of the music and lyrics. You really excelled at it here. The timing is fabulous, especially the spot on beat use of the truck colliding behind Amber.

I've downloaded this to my 'LOVE' folder because this will get tons of replay. ♥

Oh man, definitely! It certainly added to the challenge. House has the motion to match it, but it really limits your clip choices. Like, a LOT. I enjoyed the challenge... to an extent. :) But it's really rewarding to see how you describe it.

Thank you, seriously. I'm beyond flattered.

The Beastie Boys "Check Your Head" album had heavy rotation in my car's cassette player. It's one of my favorite albums. It is so great to see it used so well in your capable hands. I have listened to the songs so many times that its musicality is at the forefront for me more than the lyrics.

However, a key section is the part where it goes "I think I'm losing my mind" starting at 1:42 to 1:54 and it took me a while to realize how well you tied the zooms and pans to the instrumentation and whenever I notice that it's like "that's so cool". I love the door lock scene and the highlight for me is the Cane spin at 1:57-1:58 just lingering off that guitar lick like a diver doing a reverse somersault right after that scene a similar drunken head spin at 1:55-56. Oh yeah I love the detail to the transition at 44-45 of that doctor walking in tune to the song every single time I see it. Every single time. I could watch it all day.
bradcpu: freaking!!!bradcpu on March 1st, 2010 05:04 am (UTC)
Hey man! I'm really glad you liked this one! Yeah, I wore out "Check Your Head" on tape too. It really helps as a vidder to go in already knowing the music inside and out, you know?

But by the same token the song's so dynamic that it demands pretty much constant dramatic motion. Which rules out like 75% of House. There are still clips there you can use, but it really limits the possibilities. It's kind of like vidding with one hand tied behind your back. I enjoyed the challenge, though, and the music was so fun to visualize.

I really appreciate you pointing out your favorite moments in the vid. Helps me see what works best, you know? And almost all of the ones you mentioned were right at the heart of why I wanted to do the vid, and what I wanted to show. Which is really cool. :)

Must confess to never having watched the show, so I'm sure there are layers of meaning I missed, but DAMN that is a gorgeous vid. The cuts were so crisp and the whole vid just flowed perfectly. WOW.
bradcpu: freaking!!!bradcpu on March 1st, 2010 05:07 am (UTC)
Wow, that's so flattering! Thank you so much. It's important to me to try to make vids that can be watchable and appealing on just an aesthetic level, you know? Because that leads to rewatching, which makes the thematic aspects so much easier to communicate. Hopefully. :)

Argh. Your House vids scare the shit out of me.

This one scared me because it started kinda lighthearted, it seemed (I don't watch House), and then really melted into a drugged-out, stutter-step, trembling freaky nightmare. It's scary how serious and IMPORTANT you can make this show seem. It's scary how everything is always on the line in this vid--and it's not holding together. (The characters' lives are falling apart, not the vid. The vid is seamless.)

It's scary what an amazing vidder you are! :D :D :D
bradcpu: freaking!!!bradcpu on March 1st, 2010 05:17 am (UTC)
The truly frightening thing? What you just described sounds exactly like the season. It was indeed all fun and lighthearted... until it suddenly wasn't, and everything did indeed fall apart at the end. In a Very Big Way. It's all kinds of awesome to see you (as a non-House viewer) describe the vid that way because it means I communicated that to you. :)

I'm loving that you even *watched* the vid despite not being into the show. The fact that you actually enjoyed it? BONUS! Seriously, thank you.
laurashapiro on March 2nd, 2010 05:16 pm (UTC)
Just rewatched so I could squee some more. (:

I love what you're doing here, particularly in the third act, with the hands grasping and pulling away, people falling away from each other, love and death and hallucination. This is painful and disturbing and it also *rocks*.

Glad you still like it, Laura! Your reassurance meant so much when you first saw it. (And it still means quite a lot now!)

I think that's largely because you don't know the show, but you're able to get into the vid solely based on the flow of motion and emotion, which is such a wonderful thing to hear as a vidder.
