New vid: "Hard Sun" (Firefly)
It's still coming down on me.

Vid title: Hard Sun
Vidders: bradcpu and laurashapiro
Length: 3:38
Fandom: Firefly
Artist: Eddie Vedder

Download the M4V

Premiered at VVC 2009.

Created with contributions from Firefly vidders kiki_miserychic, milly, obsessive24, thedothatgirl, and vchrusch. Special thanks also to P., who helped with laurashapiro's footage, and to geezola who originally pointed me toward the song and also helped shoot some of my footage.

I work downtown and walk to lunch each day, listening to my ipod and imagining vids to each song. Usually Firefly vids. Doing that always makes me feel connected to something bigger, something special - both as a Firefly fan and as a member of the vidding community. It's a feeling of unity and joy that few people in my daily life would understand, but I always know that there are other people all around the world feeling the same way.

My wife told me she had a song that would make a great Firefly vid, so I put it on my ipod and listened to it on my walk... and realized that it perfectly described what I was feeling and the sense of community. That's how the vid idea was born.

I've never tried a collaborative vid, but laurashapiro is someone for whom I have a tremendous amount of respect and admiration, as a vidder and as a person, so I was very excited when she agreed to participate with this one. I had originally pictured the vid as my voice, describing my feelings, and using footage that I shot. Laura suggested that we include other Firefly fans and expand the concept to make it the voice of fandom, which totally changed the vid.

Laura also did all of the text and title work, provided ambient audio, helped with the editing, and shot some of the most important footage. She was incredibly patient and understanding throughout, and really helped get the vid out of my head and onto the screen while adding depth, inclusiveness, and unity in a way that I had never pictured. Long story short, my respect for her is even higher now.

Footage was contributed from Firefly fans in New Zealand, the U.K., Canada, and across the U.S. - from coast to coast. It really doesn't feel to me like it's "my" vid... it feels like our vid - everyone's vid. I hope you feel the same way.

Lyrics

When I walk beside her
I am the better man
When I try to leave her
I always stagger back again

Once I built an ivory tower
So I could worship from above
When I climbed down to be set free
She took me in again

It's a big, a big hard sun
Beating on the big people
In a big hard world

When I go to cross that river
She is comfort by my side
When I try to understand
She just opens up her hands

It's a big, a big hard sun
Beating on the big people
In a big hard world

Once I stood to lose her
When I saw what I had done
Bowed down and threw away the hours
Of her garden and her sun

So I tried to warn her
I turned to see her weep
40 days and 40 nights
And it's still coming down on me

Hope you enjoy the vid! Please share your thoughts.

It makes mine joyful to read that. I'm glad it brought you a little bit of what it feels like to me to come together with other vidders. We missed you!

...huh. *watches again*

This is a vid that expands the definition of vidding--that takes what vids can do in a direction totally divergent from the mainstream, and winds up saying something meaningful not only about the source, but about those who manipulate the source, and why.

I think I like it. :)
e_transitionse_transitions on August 17th, 2009 07:46 pm (UTC)
ditto - very different, but in an I-am-in-continuous-awe kind of way.

"It's a feeling of unity and joy" - I think you perfectly translated that in the vid! The whole thing is amazing

That was gorgeous! Gorgeous just, you know, the vid parts - and the meta was perfect, too! And - I do that too - I mean, not Firefly necessarily, but when I go running, I listen to music and mentally vid it!

Also, I love how you made it rain. You are a god! :-)

The most amazing feeling for me is when we're all able to connect through experiences like this. It's such a joyful feeling to know that we're all united in a way. Thank you so much for sharing that.

Also, I love how you made it rain. You are a god!
My wife and I actually chased a thunderstorm in our car to get that shot. It hadn't rained for three weeks, and it was just days until the submission deadline.

This is absolutely beautiful. The integration of Firefly with the original footage was beyond perfect and was extremely picturesque.

I also have to say this video is a perfect representation of exactly how I (and I imagine most vidders) feel while trying to gain inspiration from music. You captured the feeling of becoming immersed in your surrounds, whether your travelling on the train or walking the streets, and having ideas just flood into your consciousness. This video made it feel like an incredibly powerful experience, or at least that was my interpretation of your use of original footage.

Amazing video! :)

That is so cool. :) I had really hoped that people would be able to connect with this video in a personal way, and this is exactly the type of thing I mean. It's all about feeling like you're part of a bigger community, you know? That's such a wonderful feeling and that's what I wanted to share here.

and it makes me so happy to watch it and so sad when it's all over and the same sun that has warmed everyone is gone and only the grey rainy everyday life is left. Beautifully shot by all vidders involved.

This is by far my favourite VVC vid seen to date. There's just no competition, because this vid is just so different from all of the other vids I've seen so far. It's joyous and painful and just so perfectly encapsulates that quintessential, elusive notion that is Firefly. The message is so clear and so direct and, like, FLAIL. It's truly remarkable and an incredible boon to your vidding library. And look, you've reduced me to using words like "boon". I blame you entirely.

0:17 LOVE that slide into the show. Perfect.

0:19 wow. That slide from the credits into the actual show is amazing.

0:23 the perfect transition gives me chills.

0:40 great transition here.

0:45s "ivory tower... worship from above". Amazing use of the Mr Universe, zooming in footage to the external world of storyboarding. Absolutely inspired content-wise and riveting in terms of motion.

0:57 I LOVE the bus clips, whoever they're from. You milked the light to the fullest extent possible.

1:04 I totally dig how I get paralleled with Mal & co walking away just like me. :D :D

1:17 this is the moment where I was totally transported to inside the mind of the vidder... of every vidder, travelling on the bus listening to your vidsong, staring at the scenery but not really seeing it because you're too busy mentally rearranging clips in your head. It's an amazing feeling of community and shared experience.

1:24 from horse to car. And that beautiful flare of light, and the transition into the cars on the highway. I really love the juxtaposition between the speed of the cars and the relative slowness of Serenity onscreen until she suddenly fires up and we go into the clip again. It also invokes HL's signature moment from New Frontier, which I don't think was unintentional on your part.

1:37 me again! Wheeee!

1:47 That's an awesome Jayne moment. :D

1:53 FAB use of vocal on ship. Wow.

1:57 transition. Flawless. Awesome.

2:03 more amazing interpretation of the vocals on the light.

2:07 this shot seriously made me tear up. It's kinda what I would have pictured using in our IC Heroes collab if we ever did that, you know? A similar kind of idea, of global unitedness. So clear and so direct. And then it makes me have thinkies about how that was Earth that Was and how we're the past to this show set in the future, and this whole idea of outward expansion.

2:11 motion connectedness is gorgeous throughout the vid but it particularly strikes me here.

2:17 that thump on Jayne's back seriously made me tear up again. To me it feels like an envisioning of The IC meeting back up at VVC, somehow.

2:21 that's some truly inspired musicality on "world". The ship's already gone at that point but that sense of it remains in the smoke trail.

2:31 mourning the death of the show. Again, so incredibly clear and direct a metaphor that you don't even have to try to understand it. Perfect.

2:48 "weep". Nice.

Words cannot express how inspired I think the loooong ending shot is. The rain is perfect and ridiculously well timed. I love how you can see it on your back. I love that we can see you walking away all through the shot until the bus conceals you. I love you see that shot of Mal in the first shot of the TV, because that's the shot that closed out the show on live air, which was fitting in a way. I love the spot of reflection on the TV. I love the titles. I love that the rainy sky breaks into sun in the TV, which says everything that needs to be said.

I understand what you mean about how it's hard to categorise this vid in your catalogue of vids. On the one hand, I desperately want to say I think it's your best vid yet. But somehow that seems wrong, to say that it's a "vid" the same way that TYA and LDG are "vids"... it stands apart from that simply because of what it is and what it represents. I think it's absolutely wonderful.
bradcpubradcpu on August 20th, 2009 05:29 am (UTC)
I swear, you are just too amazing for words. I hope you know how much your thoughts here mean to me. I treasure every word, and it makes all of the self-doubt and paranoia disappear, and for a little while I feel like I am the way you see me.

It also makes me feel so wonderful to see you describe it as clear and direct. As you know, that's something that I had begun to doubt. Thank you.

0:17 LOVE that slide into the show. Perfect.
Heh. I laugh because we reshot that like 40 times.

Very pleased by your reaction to "ivory tower." :) Laura and I debated what to do there, and in the end we used a shot from the extras on the DVD set that showed someone putting together an effect for the show, and used that to represent vidding.

The bus clips were all shot by Laura. I agree, she did a great job with those. As soon as I saw them I went "Whee! We're using that!"

this is the moment where I was totally transported to inside the mind of the vidder... of every vidder, travelling on the bus listening to your vidsong, staring at the scenery but not really seeing it because you're too busy mentally rearranging clips in your head. It's an amazing feeling of community and shared experience
OMG! You just perfectly described the vid concept!! =) It worked! It really worked!

It also invokes HL's signature moment from New Frontier, which I don't think was unintentional on your part
It's certainly a definitive shot, in my opinion. Side note: That's the stretch of interstate that I travel on the way to work every day.

1:37 me again! Wheeee!
Hee. I'm hoping that even people who are not literally in the vid feel this way.

1:53 FAB use of vocal on ship. Wow.
That's definitely a Nicky moment. :) I didn't think anyone else would pick that out.

2:07 this shot seriously made me tear up
It did me too, for the same reasons. I remember emailing Laura and telling her it's the first time I had ever cried while editing. The idea that you did as well while watching... it just completes the whole circle and the whole purpose of the vid in a way that's... difficult to describe.

2:17 that thump on Jayne's back seriously made me tear up again. To me it feels like an envisioning of The IC meeting back up at VVC, somehow.
Reading *that* got me all emotional. Man, I miss you guys.

I love that the rainy sky breaks into sun in the TV, which says everything that needs to be said
=)

I think you caught onto absolutely everything I had hoped we could say with the vid and accomplish with it in terms of communicating something, which makes me feel so much more confident about it as a whole. Not an easy feat.

I wholeheartedly agree that it doesn't even feel like a "vid," or at least certainly not a vid that can be wholly possessed by any one person. I'm just glad you were able to share it so fully and so completely with us. :)

Ooh, also, I was thinking about how this concept didn't have to be done with Firefly necessarily (though I'm glad it was :D), but on re-watching I realized that one of the reasons Firefly works so well for this idea is that it too is laden with a sense of family, nostalgia, and just being in the moment. (And the hand-held/lens flares don't hurt with matching up to the fan-shot stuff!) So thanks for bringing me back to my favourite part of that series as well!

I didn't know what to expect of this, and I knew it was firefly oriented and since I haven't watched the show... *hides from rocks*...yet, I was a bit scared I wouldn't be able to follow. But what a surprise.
There's been vids about vidding and vidders but never have I seen it displayed like this in such an organic way, subtly and naturally. It is wonderfully creative and again organic and I love it so much. The energy of it is wonderful and everything's so seamless. it goes beyond what vidding is, it shows the connection a fan can have with a show, how it is interwined with real life and how the fan creation comes to life, the whole process of it. it's a beautiful and subtle hommage and a wonderful vid.
I'm deeply in love with this.

I love how seamless the vidders are part of the vid creation, you can see the vid being created before you and one walks the street thinking about it. it's intense and wonderful. Of course, because I can relate too :)
But there's a sense of how both worlds merge and that's just wonderful.
Also, song is love.

Some highlights :
0:06 love the beginning with the sun.
0:17 awesome TV placement with the connection with the show !!!
0:40 hmm, WOW transition !
0:47 loved the placement of actual vidding here
0:56 Those bus shots are love
1:16 Bike and ipod shots again. Those are great choices of clips to get the point across
1:56 Awesome connection here on the sun from real footage to the show's footage
2:57 Love the rain stuff and the connections between show/real world

Obviously, I missed some stuff with the show, but no matter, this is fabulous !!! :D
bradcpubradcpu on August 21st, 2009 04:03 am (UTC)
Oh, I totally understand how you wouldn't have known what to expect going in. I didn't know what to expect going in either! That said, it's enormously reassuring that you were able to follow it despite not having seen the show and not being a native English-speaker. :) It makes me feel really good about the work Laura and I did in trying to make it a message that almost anyone could connect with.

it shows the connection a fan can have with a show, how it is interwined with real life and how the fan creation comes to life, the whole process of it
That's such a beautiful way of putting it. Of course that's exactly what I'd expect from you.

I think this is my favorite thing I've read about the vid so far:
you can see the vid being created before you

That makes me just entirely too happy.

At 0:47 we actually used a shot from the extras of the DVD set that showed someone putting together an effect for the show to represent vidding. Glad it gets the message across. :)

Laura shot everything on the bus. I thought she did a phenomenal job with that. Milly shot the bicycle clips.

Thank you also for the compliments about my transition work. I knew that would be really important in getting across the idea of the two worlds merging, so it's really nice to see that it worked for you.

Watched this last night and it was a lovely, poetic and insightful look into Firefly and Firefly fandom across the globe and even across time in some sense. Your use of movement was great, but the transitions from Firefly to the "real life" shots were impressive and sometimes even startling (in the best possible way). I really enjoyed the constant thread you wove through the vid with the video screens of Firefly in a "real world" setting. And the ending. The ending was made of total win.
bradcpubradcpu on August 21st, 2009 04:05 am (UTC)
Thank you so much! The way you describe the vid really makes me feel like it succeeded in exactly the way Laura and I hoped it would, which is a wonderfully rewarding feeling. Was quite worried about the ending - not the least of which because it didn't rain for a solid month while we were waiting to shoot - so I appreciate the compliment about that also. :) Very glad you enjoyed it.

Oh, Jesus. This hits me where I LIVE, people! It's vidding! And loveloveloveloving a show and a "hobby" so much that you see it everywhere, no matter where you go. It's about how we can't NOT vid, once media works its way into our hearts and minds. It's about how worldwide this pastime is, and about what it means to be a fan.

I like Firefly, but the tears standing in my eyes right now are for vidding fandom. These are our people!

*sniffle*

Gorgeous blending--I gasped at the grating/gate shot, and the whole thing was just smooth as butter.

Can't get over what a great concept this is, and how well it's done.

It's so moving to see people describe it in their own words. :) It's one thing to create the vid and try to show the way you see vidding and the people who do it, something you feel inside, but it's much much more powerful when that message actually brings those people together like this and they take ownership of it in a personal way.

Thank you so so much. I really wish I could have been sitting beside you when you watched it this year, but you know... in a way I kind of feel like I was.

That is, quite possibly, the best vid I've ever seen. It's the video of you and the city, tied in with firefly... fan of the series or not, I think anyone can connect with this, and you made it not just an homage to a show you love, but fans and their love for firefly. This vid is real. I think we've all done that--browsing songs on the player, imagining a vid. Incredible work, nicely done. This is what vidding is all about, man. You, sir, and your collaborator, are gods. I don't say that about just anyone.

Definitely not buying into the "gods" part (heh), but it certainly is a vid that is as "real" as I can make it. That's me up on the screen, literally and otherwise, and I hope it's you and everyone else as well.

That's *exactly* the way I feel in reading the responses from you and the others here. It's like the thread is saying this even better than the vid did. It's just an amazing feeling. Thank you so much for watching and sharing your thoughts.

You know, I first imagined this vid as a Mal/Serenity vid, and when he told me what they were planning to do with it, I was skeptical. But hey, it worked great! Rules against nepotism prevent me from gushing.

Wow... I think you definitely accomplished what you set out to do, very impressive indeed. I'm getting all misty-eyed over here! Consider me speechless. :)

Aww, thank you! It's really a wonderful feeling to be able to share a message like this with fans. Kind of makes me feel like we're all together.
