The Fourth Wall results, vid recs
obsessive24 and I have just posted reviews and awards for some of our favorite vids of 2008 at The Fourth Wall.
Thanks to
thedothatgirl for the beautiful award graphics.
We always expect a very high level of competition at The Fourth Wall, as we're seeing what each vidder feels is his or her best work from the past year.
This year, not only was the cutoff point especially brutal, there were many vids left out for other reasons.
There were several that we both agreed deserved recognition, but there simply wasn't a category at The Fourth Wall under which they fit. Neither innovation, music use, nor the overall vidding category honored what those vids did best, so they were left out.
Other vids were very strong in all three categories, but not strong enough in any single one of the three to make our shortlist for that category.
We'd also like to clarify that when judging a vid's music use, we put equal weight on how the vidder uses both music and lyrics.
This was a very difficult judging process and no one should feel like we didn't like their vid just because it doesn't appear on a shortlist here. In fact, each of us has personal favorite entries don't appear among the winners.
All of that said, we obviously feel that the vids that we are honoring are uniformly fantastic and are all among the best vids of 2008.
Thank you to everyone who entered, and we hope to see you next year.
And now some recs! More specifically, here are my personal favorite ~25 vids from the 69 entries we had this year.
Some of these vids were honored by the site and some were not (for the reasons mentioned above), but all are extremely well-made, entertaining vids. I'll try to very briefly explain why here. :) All of these can be accessed on our entries page.
"Love Turns 40" by jarrow (Closer)
An absolute masterpiece of pacing and subtle use of motion
"Counting Bodies" by Milly (Angel)
One of the most chilling, striking vids I've seen in the past year
"Stray" by Balistik (The Bourne Trilogy)
Excellent action vid with an interesting point about the main character's relationships
"Kamikaze" by Thandie (Equilibrium)
Beautiful motion and musicality
"Bent" by Wolfpup (Supernatural)
A very good match of vidsong, concept, and fandom
"Intergalactic Friends" by Dragonchic (Smallville)
Incredibly fun, dynamic Lex/Clark overview that gives back as much as the viewer puts into it
"Just a Friend of Mine" by Lady_M4ryjane (Multi)
A very convincing and playful AU

Stunning use of secondary source in the ambitious AU

Recruiter vid that makes excellent use of both the music and the show's photography
"What We Had" by Cherry (Doctor Who)
