The Fourth Wall results, vid recs
[info]obsessive24 and I have just posted reviews and awards for some of our favorite vids of 2008 at The Fourth Wall.

Thanks to [info]thedothatgirl for the beautiful award graphics.

We always expect a very high level of competition at The Fourth Wall, as we're seeing what each vidder feels is his or her best work from the past year.

This year, not only was the cutoff point especially brutal, there were many vids left out for other reasons.

There were several that we both agreed deserved recognition, but there simply wasn't a category at The Fourth Wall under which they fit. Neither innovation, music use, nor the overall vidding category honored what those vids did best, so they were left out.

Other vids were very strong in all three categories, but not strong enough in any single one of the three to make our shortlist for that category.

We'd also like to clarify that when judging a vid's music use, we put equal weight on how the vidder uses both music and lyrics.

This was a very difficult judging process and no one should feel like we didn't like their vid just because it doesn't appear on a shortlist here. In fact, each of us has personal favorite entries don't appear among the winners.

All of that said, we obviously feel that the vids that we are honoring are uniformly fantastic and are all among the best vids of 2008.

Thank you to everyone who entered, and we hope to see you next year.

And now some recs! More specifically, here are my personal favorite ~25 vids from the 69 entries we had this year.

Some of these vids were honored by the site and some were not (for the reasons mentioned above), but all are extremely well-made, entertaining vids. I'll try to very briefly explain why here. :) All of these can be accessed on our entries page.

"Love Turns 40" by jarrow (Closer)
An absolute masterpiece of pacing and subtle use of motion

"Counting Bodies" by Milly (Angel)
One of the most chilling, striking vids I've seen in the past year

"Stray" by Balistik (The Bourne Trilogy)
Excellent action vid with an interesting point about the main character's relationships

"Kamikaze" by Thandie (Equilibrium)
Beautiful motion and musicality

"Bent" by Wolfpup (Supernatural)
A very good match of vidsong, concept, and fandom

"Intergalactic Friends" by Dragonchic (Smallville)
Incredibly fun, dynamic Lex/Clark overview that gives back as much as the viewer puts into it

"Just a Friend of Mine" by Lady_M4ryjane (Multi)
A very convincing and playful AU

"Snow on the Sahara" by Absrip (Supernatural)
Stunning use of secondary source in the ambitious AU

"Brandon" by Foomatic (Boys Don't Cry)
A gut-wrenching character study with incredibly smart editing and clever musicality

"To The Rhythm of the War Drums" by Tulzdavampslayer (Heroes)
Recruiter vid that makes excellent use of both the music and the show's photography

"What We Had" by Cherry (Doctor Who)
A very smart statement about the Doctor's companions

"Your Love Is A Lie" by Kitty (Supernatural)
Effortlessly convincing AU that's almost like watching a fanfic

"Don't Give Up" by Heather (Final Fantasy)
Gorgeous music use and very moving

"I Want You (She's So Heavy)" by kiki_miserychic (Multi)
Guard your brain - this video will devour it

"Tourniquet" by Nikki (Ginger Snaps, Marilyn Manson)
A very well made performance/mood vid that seamlessly blends horror sources

"Sea Lion" by Lithium Doll (Supernatural)
Very insightful, very musical look at the family curse

"Dreams" by Buffyann (Heroes)
A beautiful, moody flow of reality and unreality

"Signed, the Doctor" by Hollywoodgrrl (Doctor Who)
Gorgeous and painfully poetic AU about Rose and the Other Doctor

"This Is Matrix Life" by Mr. Anderson (Matrix trilogy)
This vid is your life.

"Karma Police" by Meivocis (Life On Mars)
Addictive overview of the main character's story

"The Whole Truth" by Odissey (Multi)
Watch just for the titles; stick around for the blending of sources

"Wanted - Drift" by Tar4s (Wanted)
Adrenaline-fueled action vid with white-knuckled musicality

"Thrown Away" by Leviathan (BtVS, AtS)
Razor sharp pacing and motion in this Spike action study

"My Skin" by Raspberry Splat (Doctor Who)
Tremendously accessible emotion and beautiful flow

"Low Red Moon" by Melymbrosia (Supernatural)
Some of the most evocative imagery I saw this round

"Beautiful Struggle" by NC (Harry Potter)
Works on almost every level that a vid can work. Still can't stop rewatching!

Thanks so much for these. I'm hunting and downloading things I haven't seen before, and a few I have seen but want to see again. :)

You just described the whole joy of the site, for me anyway. Hope you enjoy!

Awesome :)

I'm so glad 'Snow on the Sahara' was one of your choices. Probably the best video I saw last year. I still watch it regularly and it still gives me chills.

It's definitely some of the most creative use of secondary source I've seen in a long, long time.

There are probably a half-dozen more that I *should* have recced, but at some point you just have to stop, you know?

Sooo many recs. But they're all deserved. I think the calibre of videos that don't win is the real testament to the competiveness of the site.

Given that I apparently can't recognize my own best work, I honestly wasn't expecting anything. So winning an award was a real surprise, but definitely a nice one. :D

*Definitely*. No matter where the cutoff point is, I feel like I'm leaving out deserving vids. It was just really tremendous quality across the board.

It's not like you submitted a vid that made us go "Oh god my eyes! The horror!"

Btw, we both really enjoyed yours. You did a great job of showing off the gorgeous photography of the source and building a transparent narrative - which is *very* hard to do, regardless of source. So, yeah. Damn you for making it so hard.

Oh, thank you so much! The cinematography in Yuma is to die for. It's pretty hard to go wrong when you get to play with such a nice source.

Mostly, I was flattered to have my lil ol vid to be flanked by so many much more experienced vidders and much more impressive vids. I submitted for the experience of it, really. I am glad I wasn't in your shoes, though. There are just too many vids on your list and of the total vids submitted. I would've given up and been like, "uh, awards for everyone?"

It's an honor for My Skin to be rec'd by you and just to see it listed along with these tremendous vids. I can't begin to tell you how much it means...thank you for your awesome comment about the vid too. :) :)
