Thanks to [info]obsessive24 for the insightful last-minute beta.

I went into this project wanting to think as little as possible and just enjoy it... to make something fun for fans of the show.

But, as usual, I had a lot more time to think about it than I had to actually work on it, so some meta ideas kind of wormed their way into it - some involving Ando and a Peter Parker parallel. But mostly it's about defining "hero" and taking control of life. Hopefully there's still some fun in there. :)

The song was both a blessing and a curse. The lyrics and stop-start tempo really inspired me. But the musicality of it all kind of comes at you in layers: sticky guitars, cymbal crashes everywhere, mushy melodic vocals, and waves of drums sprinkled over the top. It was very difficult to find the right pace for the vid because you can't really latch onto any one element of the music. In the end, I just went with the good old trial and error approach.

I used quite a bit of time toggle because both the song and the source seemed to be suggesting it. (Plus - whee! Time toggle!) Aside from that, not much here in the way of effects. I tried to let the source do the work for me. A couple of shots took some tweaking, mostly to remove subtitles or make the clip-to-clip motion/lighting/eyeline a little less jarring.

Too alarming now to talk about
Take your pictures down and shake it out
Truth or consequence, say it aloud
Use that evidence, race it around

There goes my hero
Watch him as he goes
There goes my hero
He's ordinary

Don't the best of them bleed it out
While the rest of them peter out
Truth or consequence, say it aloud
Use that evidence, race it around

There goes my hero
Watch him as he goes
There goes my hero
He's ordinary

Kudos my hero leaving all the best
You know my hero, the one that's on

There goes my hero
Watch him as he goes
There goes my hero
He's ordinary

Hope you enjoy the vid!

Woo ! That was so much fun !
Tech wise, some stuff just made me want to throw my heroes vid in progress to trash. thanks brad... :P
Seriously, time-toggle is love and the transition painting-real scene at 1:47. It is always very tempting to do this with Heroes but not always so successfully done. and here, I came back 3 times just to see this cause it was just beautiful. Transition at 1:23 is love as well. Love the door opening at 2:01.
You used the source very well as well. :)

I think you captured the spirit of Ando/Hiro very well. And I loved how the vid progress too and how it becomes more serious and more of a struggle of our "Hiro" beginning around 2:43.
I also loved how you established the story in the beginning, the narrative is really clear is what I mean. :)
and It was fun to leave some subtitles in !

I'm glad you enjoyed it, Alex! More than anything, I just wanted this one to be something that people could have fun watching.

A good bit of the time toggle and effects work was like that in the source. I just tried to highlight and complement it the best I could... just show it off.

Most of the things you pointed out were just great scenes the way they were in the show. That makes me happy because I didn't want this to be a vid about *me* or about my editing - I wanted to be about what makes the show and these two characters so fun.

the narrative is really clear is what I mean
Whee! Thanks, Alex. :) I'm sure as a vidder you know how nice it is to hear that. Also very glad to hear that the subtitles didn't bug you.

Thanks again! It's always a treat to read your thoughts.

*little incoherent handflails*

Yay! That's exactly what I wanted to hear!

I thought the Peter/Ando - Peter/Sylar moment was extremely important for the narrative, so I wanted to try to present it in a way that would be impactful because that would help make the ending a little more poignant. It sounds like it worked! :)

It's a wonderful to think that it could entertain someone who hasn't seen the show.

I admire the fact that you're watching other vidders to learn (also, that's humbling to hear). I'm always trying to improve as well. Maybe we can learn from each other.

Brad, this is awesome! The time toggle definitely suits both the characters and the song very nicely. I especially love all the connections with the comics you put together (but I'm not surprised I picked that out, since my favorite vid of Nicky's is "Change" *g*). Particularly the one with them under the Homecoming banner. Wow.

Great use of motion, beautiful transitions, and all in all a wonderful vid. No wonder you're one of my heroes :-)

I watched several eps, but never really got into the show, mainly because Hiro and Ando were the only characters I liked, so this vid made me really happy. And I've been waiting YEARS for someone to use this song -- it's been on my list of songs to vid since it came out, except nothing I'm into ever fit -- but everyone always went for the icky, treacly Enrique Iglesias, Mariah Carey, or Chad Kroeger "hero" songs, instead. *g*

Really??? That's so neat! I'm glad you think I did it justice.

Yeah, these two were in my opinion the best thing about the show in season 1 (and beyond). They were just pure joy. Every time the show swung around to their storyline, I sat forward and got excited. I mean you just can't help but smile when you see them.

I'm not a huge fan of the song, but I watched it anyway, and lo, the pretty! Basically, Hiro + Ando = best friends forever. I love how you showed Hiro growing up in this vid, a nice mirror of how he developed all of first season. And the bits with the clock are fantastical. Just lovely, as per usual. :)

Hey, thanks for watching even though it's not your favorite song, and I deeply appreciate the kind words about it. There are so many great time metaphors to play around with when it comes to Hiro (and, to a lesser extent) Ando, so I basically had to work to limit myself. I actually pulled shots of about a dozen clocks in different places from throughout the season, but they just didn't fit anywhere in the vid.

Yay it's here!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG so much Hiro/Ando love. It makes me squee with joy. :D

I see what you mean about the music, but FWIW I think you struck the right balance in terms of what to acknowledge. I have a stupid question though, what's a start-stop tempo?

I love the beginning with all the intercutting of Hiro being introduced to his powers and shots of the mundane. Including the latter makes Hiro's journey seem that much more special. And the on-beat clock ticks are awesome! Then the guitars kick in when he finally gets time to go backwards. Hee! You get a real sense of Hiro's wonder and elation at discovering his gift.

The subtitles weren't at all distracting. If anything, they reinforced what you were trying to get across with the visuals. "I did it!" Hehe, perfect.

0:21-0:33 - Whee, awesome continued external motion
0:38 - Hehe, Hiro jumps in on-beat. Cute!
0:48 - Awesome way to introduce the comics. I really love what you did with them throughout the vid.
0:51 - Hiro is the uber-geek! That's why we love him.
1:06 - Hiro being dragged away on "There goes my hero." LOL!
1:22 - Awesome use of the comic panel! It's like substitute dialogue. And I liked how you hinted at it coming with earlier quick cuts.
1:41 - Bus crashes on the drum beats. Love it.
1:47 - The spin into the roulette wheel. OMG! How do you come up with this stuff?
1:52 - The transition from the painted homecoming banner to the real thing. Holy crap! This is getting insane!
1:54 - Okay, I just thought them sitting up together was insanely cute.
2:18 - On beat self-satisfied nod. Hiro's too cute.
2:20 - Ahh, I love this clip of Ando juxtaposed with the "There goes my hero" lyric. He's Hiro's biggest fan! :D
2:33 - Oooh, awesome time toggle and transition. Went very well with the guitars.
Love all the clips of frozen time in the bridge, and then how it accelerates into the explosion. And then oh no, we get sad Hiro! He needs a hero too.
3:05 - Love that you went back to the clock from the beginning and showed it tick forward. Hiro's feeling a bit powerless now, isn't he?
3:13 - Ando to the rescue!! Yay!!!
3:14 - Hee, slow mo walk. Adds an extra level of cool. ;)
3:18 - Hiro sees Ando and he's happy again! Behold the power of BFFs.
3:31 - "I believe in you." LOVE that you left that in. So perfect.
3:39 - Awesome time toggle! I loved your continued use of those through the entire vid. Also love the ending shot. Two best friends ready to take on the world.

The switch in POV at the end was genius. Really, I didn't see it coming, but it works so perfectly. Even superheroes need someone to look up to. Even though Hiro is the one with the powers, Ando is his support system and he needs him. You're totally reminded me of why I love Hiro and Ando so much and now I can't wait for Heroes to come back!! To me this is the definitive Hiro/Ando vid and I don't see anyone topping it.

Why don't I have a Hiro/Ando icon? Oh well, this is close enough.

W00T! I'm so glad you liked this! I mean, I'm always glad, but especially so this time because I you were a big part of the inspiration for it. It's almost like a DC tribute vid... or at least a tribute to the influence you've had on me.

The stop/start tempo is my clumsy way of describing the fact that the music has all of these little breaks and pauses throughout, and keeps sort of speeding up and slowing down. Which works well for the subject matter in theory, but it's tough to actually reflect in the visuals.

I love the way you describe the opening! It was really important to feel that joy in breaking out of the mundane in the opening if the last third of the video was going to have any impact, you know? Plus... Hiro squees are always fun.

There were so much more "cuteness" on the timeline at one point - "flying man!," the duo as bellboys, etc. - but had to die so that the vid could have a story and a point. Really wish I could have kept some of them.

I've noticed that the comics and the paintings kind of sneak into Heroes vids even when you don't set out with that goal. They're just so engrained into the mythos that it's hard to *not* use them. Glad they seemed to have worked here. :)

Hiro being dragged away on "There goes my hero." LOL!
Heh. In the opening verse/chorus I wanted him to seem (through Ando's eyes) to be an amusingly insane geek.

Funny thing about that roulette wheel shot: I hadn't considered using Peter and his scene with Ando at all, but then Kim (who mocks Peter incessantly) suggested I just show a random shot of Peter on the line "while the rest of them Peter out." :P I didn't, obviously, but that led me to the whole Ando-regret-redemption thread of the vid. And *that* led me to the spinny connection. So I guess it worked out in the end.

Love all the clips of frozen time in the bridge, and then how it accelerates into the explosion. ... Love that you went back to the clock from the beginning and showed it tick forward. Hiro's feeling a bit powerless now
YAY! It worked! If you were here now I'd be hugging you Ando-style. Such is my jubilation. You said it better than I could. His power can't stop anything or change the stuff that matters most. But superpowers aren't what define a hero, as Ando shows. :)

Hee, slow mo walk. Adds an extra level of cool
Heh, you know when I went back to grab that clip for the vid I was *shocked* to see that it wasn't slow mo in the source. I mean, I remembered it in slow motion.

Thank you so so so much for this, DC. It really made the whole vid worth it.

Cracking vid, Brad! I love how you've managed to capture the cuteness of Hiro and Ando whilst simultaneously giving us the awesome Hiro as Hero stuff.

I love the roulette transition and the welcome banner one, they're just so cool. What I really love though is how in the last 30s or so when Hiro is kinda making a mess of everything it's Ando that becomes the Hero. I love that and wish the show had done more of it.

The Ando-as-hero stuff was sort of sprinkled through S1, but I don't know if it was presented as well as it could have been. It just sort of happened in a flash and was gone, lost in the whirl of plotlines. But, hey, that's why God made vidders. :)

Reckon it would be harder to pick a more appropriate song for Hiro from Heroes! Definately my favourite of all the good guys. :)

Im with all the others on this one, I really liked what you did with the dynamic duo here, especially the turn-around to focus on Ando as the "hero" at the end - it was a great touch!

DC pretty has pretty much nailed all my favourite moments in her post too. Will be going stright onto the Mediagate to watch on telly & share with the wife (she loves Hiro the best!).

Ha. I told a buddy at work which song I was using, and he said "Isn't that a little obvious?" I'm like "well, yeah. That's the point." Mostly I just liked that the lyrics let me play around with narrative voice and POV.

Hope your wife enjoys it. It's pretty cool to imagine it playing on the Anderson TV set on the other side of the world. Maybe it'll help you celebrate that big Giants win. (Btw - Osi graduated from my university, so I was pulling for the G-men too)

Aw, that was great! Very upbeat and perfectly focuses on the heroic aspects of the pair. Hiro and Ando were so cute together in first season and this song is really a nice match for them. As with the others, I love how you turned the tables at the end and focused on shots of Ando saving Hiro instead of the other way around. Great twist! The other two parts that I especially liked were the top down spinning sped up clip matching with the turning of the wheel at 1:43 and the brilliant transition from painting to real life at 1:48. The latter looks fantastic. I did something similar in my Heroes video (photo -> real event) but it didn't come out looking as good. Impressive!

Great job, all around!

I'm glad you enjoyed it. Very flattered by some of your comments. Feel like I'm taking too much credit for the source at times, though. I mean most of the visual wow was lifted straight from the show - there's just so much of it in the Hiro/Ando storyline. All I did was position it a certain way on the timeline and maybe tweak the lighting. But I just couldn't be more pleased to see how well the narrative seems to come across. It's so reassuring to read that.

Wee! I've been looking forward to this vid because I've never watched an Ando/Hiro vid and I knew you'd kick ass. I love that the song choice could be cheesy, but you use it so well without making it corny.

Of course I love all the beats with the clock and the back and forth using the drums. I'm impressed with your use of the subtitles. I can't imagine how painstaking all those subtitles must have been. The swooshing motion in the :30s is so awesome. I love all the callbacks with the Vulcan hands. OMG, the spinning over Peter and Sylar to the roulette wheel is freaking genius. The integration of the comics is so well done that the transition at 1:47 feels natural and doesn't halt the vid to a "oh look, a cool effect" stop. All the time toggling is so top notch that it feels made for it.

Ando is my hero too. Hiro and Ando's love can save the world, yo. The switching POV does wonders for the vid with all the motion and kickassery. The instrumental section is especially strong with the amazing time toggling and quick cut motion. I love the places that you took this vid. I starts out light and exhilarating with so much hope and fun, then progresses along with the characters and the season to a darker and more dangerous place that is no less exhilarating.

Brad is my hero.

That's what all my friends were telling me when they heard the idea (that it could be corny). Made me extra-careful in avoiding it.

The subtitles did ruin a few shots that I would have used, but they weren't as big of a problem as I thought they'd be when I started the project. Mostly, Hiro/Ando is just great source all the way around. It's full of fantastic source effects and awesomeness, and you really don't have to do much to it but throw it on the timeline and pat yourself on the back. :P

It starts out light and exhilarating with so much hope and fun, then progresses along with the characters and the season to a darker and more dangerous place that is no less exhilarating.

Oh, how I love this. I love the hero reversal at the end, they really are each other's heroes, which is what makes their relationship so awesome. I was truly curious at how you'd do the video considering most of the Hiro and Ando scenes have subtitles over them, and you worked around and with them wonderfully.

1:43 The shot spinning turning into the wheel, it's so gorgeous.
1:47-1:48 Honest to God, I shouted 'WHAT? NO WAY' when I saw that and then went back like five times. It looks SO good.
2:45-3:07 I find that section so heartbreaking, and it's how you see that he really needs Ando there, and then he comes bursting through the door!

Thanks so much, Milly!

they really are each other's heroes
That's what I love so much about their story. I mean, it doesn't *start* that way. In the beginning, Ando thinks Hiro is funny but frustratingly insane, and Hiro thinks Ando can't see beyond his cubicle and his internet porn. That starting point made it so much more interesting to see how their relationship developed.

I really can't take credit for the effects. Pretty much all I did was drag stuff onto the timeline and maybe tweak the timing or the lighting a bit. It's just great source material to work with.

I had gotten a little tired of Hiro and Ando's wacky road trip during season 1, but this vid reminds me of how much I love the pair. I love how you show Hiro's exuberance and Ando coming into his own heroic role. I love how you introduce Hiro in the opening with the clock and the general glee and lovely movement. And then how he gets more complex when Ando comes in and see more sides of Hiro. Hopefully you know how I totally idol-worship you and stalk you from a legally safe distance, so logging on tonight and seeing this, it was like Christmas morning - without all the ties and socks.

The tempo/mood change at 2:42 just kills me.
It's such a relief to read that. I was so worried about that part and getting the pacing right.

I'm truly flattered, and I just can't thank you enough for telling me how much you enjoyed it.

They're like wonderful little sprinkles on an already delicious vidcake.
Now I'm hungry.

Hiro/Ando-relationship was one of my favorite things in S1 (and one of those I missed a lot in S2), and this vid is an amazing, fun tribute to their friendship. The song choice is just about perfect, and I love the POV switch that shows how Ando is a hero to Hiro. They just had this incredible faith in each other. This made me remember that I didn't fall for Heroes for nothing. Thank you for that!

Thanks so much! Like you, Hiro and Ando's S1 storyline was a big part of why I fell for Heroes in the first place. This vid was partly to help me remember that and partly to celebrate it. I'm really glad that came across for you. :)

I love this so much!

Hiro! Ando! The subject switch at 3:06 made me jump up & down with glee. Yes, Ando *is* a hero! Awesome job.

W00t! One of the best feelings in vidding is in successfully passing along the joy (or more often) the misery that inspired the vid. And I can tell that you felt it here. :) Thanks, you.

Ugh, I SO want to watch this, but I can't until I finish my own Hiro vid. which I'm sure will suck next to yours. *sigh*

That was awesome. I love how you built up to the more serious scenes at the end of the season and there being some things Hiro couldn't stop, and how the song totally complemented that as well, and the switch to Ando was very nicely done.

So cool.

Thanks so much for saying so! This was one of those cases where the song just seemed to be a such a natural fit with the flow of their S1 arc that it was leading me along by the nose. I'm really glad it came through so well.
