Goodnight Moon by Shivaree

There's a nail in the door
And there's glass on the lawn
Tacks on the floor
And the TV is on
And I always sleep with my guns
When you're gone

There's a blade by the bed
And a phone in my hand
A dog on the floor
And some cash on the nightstand
When I'm all alone the dreaming stops
And I just can't stand

What should I do I'm just a little baby
What if the lights go out and maybe
then the wind just starts to moan
Outside the door it followed me home
Now goodnight moon
I want the sun
If it's not here soon
I might be done
No it won't be too soon 'til I say
Goodnight moon

There's a shark in the pool
And a witch in the tree
A crazy old neighbor and he's been watching me
And there's footsteps loud and strong coming down the hall

Something's under the bed
Now it's out in the hedge
There's a big black crow sitting on my window ledge
And I hear something scratching through the wall

Oh what should I do I'm just a little baby
What if the lights go out and maybe
I just hate to be all alone
Outside the door it followed me home
Now goodnight moon
I want the sun
If it's not here soon
I might be done
No it won't be too soon 'til I say
Goodnight moon

Well you're up so high
How can you save me
When my dark comes here
Tonight to take me up
To my front walk
And into bed
where it kisses my face
And eats my head

Just to let you know, I got an error trying to unzip the wmv file. It might just be my mac or a corrupted DL or something, but I figure a heads up never hurts. Unless heavy implements are involved. Trying with the avi one now ...

Yeah, that's me being impatient. The wmv is still uploading. I'll update the post once it's finished. The avi should be up, though. Hope you like it! Let me know if you have any trouble.

Ok, back with love comments.
Brad, you're made of awesome. I'm serious. I just love what you do so much. I can't explain it.
I didn't see it as an horror vid either, I found it totally bearable/tolerable(?) and this is coming from a anti-gore person. You set the mood so beautifully in that vid and it flows extremmely naturally. I love how it's scary but in a sort of light way. It felt like a tale, you know ?
And I laughed at the "do you wanna quit" shots !! Good one !
Tech-wise, Your transitions are always fantastic and your approach to editing is, I feel, very unique, which is very inspiring. I'm always watching your vid thinking "how did he think of that ?" and I mean that in the best way possible.

Favourite moments:
0:11 Mr muggles walkign down the strairs and beautiful transition to handsome Mohinder and then Mr. Glasses.
0:16 "oh man, brad used one of the most important shot from my current vid in his... *head desk*" LOL
0:25 I really loved the use of those tea cups on the table. They really is something with them that sets the ambiance of something being abandonned. LOVE.
1:00 Love the overlays here. Beautiful
1:04-1:10 Love the moment with mohinder's dream little boy, I loved how you used his expression for there.
1:16 only you can use a shot of nothingness as perfectly.
1:24 Again, Transition king is in the house.
1:44-1:54 I think this is my favourite section. I just love how it's set up.
2:05 : "just a little baby" on the most disguting shot ever. But perfect.
2:12 : "hate to be all alone" is beautiful ! did you slow moed ? it's so pretty !
2:12-2:20: wait, THIS is my favourite section ! it's so well done, with this shot of parkman slightly ghosted and the sync on everything. Plus, it just flows so well.
2:35: Okay, I generally hate the balck and white stuff but it's really well done here and nostalgic for this moment.
2:54 the switch to color again is fantastic ! and I also love the whispering section that follows. "and eats my head" hehe.
3:27: "goodnight moon" are you trying to depress me ? cause it's working !
3:37 : The snow section is wondefully poetic in the middle of all this blood
3:50: Excellent !

needless to say I love it ! So happy halloween to you ! and thanks for this wonderful vid ! I should maybe start working now.

That kicked ass! I loved the whole thing to bits, but the parts I enjoyed the most were when the song matched to Mr. Muggles walking in the middle, the black and white sequence, and the Nathan & Sylar mother parallel. The whole thing flowed wonderfully.

Mr. Muggles was lots of fun. He's such a great tool to represent the whole "something's wrong" feeling of the house, plus little doggy footsteps to music is always a good. The Nathan/Sylar segment was what made me want to do the vid - it was all sort of building to that part. Hope you keep enjoying it, and thanks so much for the compliments.

Ohhh, man, watching one of your vids is like having a little vidding orgasm. Seriously.

You already know I love the song and the subject and you, so it should come to no surprise that I completely adore this vid. It set the mood of Heroes very well, that spectacular-ordinariness of the characters that makes them so unique and watchable.

Of course, being nine, I giggled at Mr Muggles. And, seriously, you did nothing to dispell my "Mr Bennet is *so* creepy when it comes to Claire in Season One" theory.

I've been eagerly awaiting this one. You know I have. And, to prove it, you know the media on my poor comp is dead, so to watch this thing I had to DL it, unzip it, transfer it to the moveable harddrive, take that to a different computer and set up there so I could watch it... then race back here to comment... all that effort and it was definitely worth it.

You rock my socks.

Hahaha! I think I've spent my whole fandom life waiting for that exact feedback. Now I can die a happy man. (Though hopefully not for a few more years.)

Thanks so much for the song, Jacqui! I don't know if I would have ever found another song that summed up S1 Heroes the way this one does. So, really, this vid is all because of you.

I giggled at Mr Muggles
Apparently you were not alone. :) Looks like Mr. Muggles kind of stole the show in this one.

Excellence, as usual. I apparently am not alone when it comes to enjoyment of the Mr. Muggles moments -- my particular favorite being the clock transition.

When you were describing the black and white part to me, I really didn't have a handle on how exactly it would work (not knowing the song might have played some part in that, though) but I think it's one of -- if not THE -- strongest points (for me, at least).

Another fave: Claire's mom's flaming hand transitioning to the flaming Bennett family picture. You're just trying to give me fic ideas, aren't you?

That always happens when I try to describe what I'm planning with a vid. (I suck at words. That's why I'm a journalist.) Glad that part worked for you, though. Every time I heard the bridge of that song, I always saw black and white.

I'm so glad you vidded this song. It's vaguely creepy and it works well with the subject. Everyone has such deep and dark family issues. As with so many fandoms, family is important, but ultimately screwed up. And sadly, most of the characters would be better off without their family in some respects, but would never survive. The creepiness of the song comes off well and I can see your Halloween lyllabye approach

Great introduction to the characters in the vid. Your transitioning continues to be evolving, as well as your motion. I like that you didn't stick strictly to the lyrics so much that it hampered your storytelling. The Molly overlay is lovely, and the Niki one, and the Micah one...

There's a big black crow sitting on my window ledge - Thanks for bringing back that creepy feeling Mr. Bennet gave me in the beginning of the season.

If there was an award for the best use of Mr. Muggles, this would get it. :)

I love Claire's mom lighting the fire in her hand and then it going into the burning family photo. Something as simple and quick as that tells volumes.

The Nathan and Sylar section is sickly awesome. I lovelovelove Sylar and Niki sliding down the door. You have so many great and subtle parallels, it blows my mind.

Seriously considering doing a [info]kiki_miserychic-style audio commentary for this one at some point, if nothing else so I can remember what I was trying to do with each part. Yours was fascinating, so it makes me want to do something similar and hope somehow it will be as cool.

family is important, but ultimately screwed up
Ain't that the truth. ... Oh, you're talking about the show? Yes, that too.

Your transitioning continues to be evolving, as well as your motion
Do you really think so? I hope it is. I was focusing on improving that in this vid in particular, trying to find a better sense of how to make a flow out of lots of little pieces. I appreciate that.

I tried to sort of dance around the lyrics - go literal at times (but not necessarily at the same time that the words are sung); ironic at other times; use a metaphor for others - and just sort of roll it all into the flow. I'm still getting used to doing that, but I'm hoping that down the road it'll just be natural.

I loves me some creepy Mr. Bennet. Had to cut a whole bunch of shots like that for time. (Ugh! Painful!) Cut a bunch of Mr. Muggles too.

The heart of the whole Claire segment to me - the one that sums it all up - is the hand burning the photo, so I'm really thrilled that you picked that one out.

Whitney compliments make me a happy Brad. Did I mention that you're my vid goddess? I'm pretty sure I did.

Great vid, Brad! Uber-creepy. I've only seen bits and pieces of Heroes (Nicky has provided me with S1 but so far I've only caught snippits when hubby stole the discs and was watching them) so I am sure that a lot of the contextual stuff was lost on me. My feedback therefore is all squee about smooth transitions and fantastic lighting, and how the footage went so well with a style of music that I'd personally not think of vidding to.

Oh, and I loved the "do you want to quit" shot at the end. Fantastic!

Oh, you should definitely watch the show. It starts off slowly - there's a lot of character introduction and seemingly separate plot threads at first. But if you can make it to about episode 9... wow. It's tough to stop watching.

A lot of the lighting in the vid is pure source beauty. Heroes has probably the most beautiful photography I've ever seen on TV. As a vidder I feel like a kid in a candy store, you know?

Glad you enjoyed it! Maybe you'll even like it a little more after you see the show.

Fabulosity!

The Mr. Muggles shots will endear you to me forever. :)

But beyond that, some other parts I can't get enough of:

1:25 Creepy Haitian dude covering lens with hand. So menacing.

1:34 Shots of Eden and Haitian on "neighbor watching me." Again so unsettling.

1:40 "strong footstep" Using the painting here was brilliant--showing a static form gave weight to the image, and the painting is also forshadowing, so it's extra creepy.

In general, I thought the seamless blending of the painted universe with the real one was a special strength of the vid. So smooth and organic!

1:53-4 scary Mr. Bennett! Hard to forget we thought he might be bad for much of S1 when watching this vid.

2:13 Claire's slow fall...effect? Lens frame? I don't know, but it looks awesome.

2:29 - 2:34 Probably my favorite part...all the shots of the Homecoming horror, and then the creepy Bennett watching over shoulder (a call back to theearliest section of the vid, I think), and then the reveal that Claire is innocently coloring in the Homecoming banner...it's like I discovered the meaning of dread all over again.
And then the badass zoom into the eyes? So cool!!!

3:52 The reversed(?) Haitian zooming out of the cell with finger to lips (mirroring Jessica's gesture) is super creepy.

The Mr. Muggles shots will endear you to me forever
I can now strike that off the list of words I never thought I'd hear. :) Mr. Muggles is so iconic and so fun to play around with as a vidder, so it was tough to not use more of him.

The Haitian-hand, Eden, and "footstep" shots were two of my first, strongest visual ideas for the vid, so I'm really glad those came across the way you describe. They had to carry the mood for their segments.

2:13 Claire's slow fall...effect? Lens frame?
It's the shot of Isaac having a "vision" of what's going to happen to Claire on Homecoming. I just put a filter on it so that I could control the lighting and do kind of a reveal.

it's like I discovered the meaning of dread all over again
How cool is that comment?? If the vid were a movie, that would be the box cover quote!

I really appreciate it, and I'm so glad you enjoyed watching it.

Just a quick post to tell you how much I loved this. You really are the master of the intelligent comparison shots. You really brought out how the characters are connected which is something I feel the show kind of failed to do.

Given your new title I can definitely say that I bow before the Transition King. They're all so wonderful but Muggles into the clock was a standout for me.

Also lots of hands in this one. Hands on faces, hands reaching out, hands dangling. All of which adds to the sense of disquiet you build in the vid.

Awesome!

It's neat that you picked up on that. When watching the show, I kept noticing how it uses hands, closeups, and details shots to such creepy effect. There are a lot of horror filmmaking techniques employed in Heroes.

I bow before the Transition King
I'd settle for "guy who does competent transitions." Doesn't really roll of the tongue, does it?

I gotta say, though, "Transition King" would probably be the worst superhero ever. "OK, we've got a burning building. Batman, you save the people inside. Superman, use your freeze breath. Transition King, you - er - go edit."

Your vid has rendered me speechless. No pun intended! *snicker*

Seriously! I had my heart in my mouth downloading and then watching there was just so much going on it broke my brain!

I'm not sure I can actually respond about this vid without writing actual meta about it. *scratches head* Or if I did it would be along the lines of 'omg, how do you do such brilliant transitions?! *cries*' or 'Mr Muggles teee heeeeee!'or 'I can't believe you used the oh-so-unsubtle 'do you want to quit?' screen effectively! Actually your brilliance as a vidder is summed up for me in the fact that by the time you used it I actually did not laugh at it for the very first time EVER! (And I cried tears of laughter when I first saw it!) It seemed... chilling somehow. *shudders*

Ok, attempt at overall thoughts on vid:
1. You've made me think about the family relationships on the show in a completely new light. My running joke in Season One was how incestuous the subtext of the show was. I see that I was missing the point there--you're right in saying that the connection between parent and child lies at the heart of much (all?) of the violence on the show, which is why the vid's got me all thinky.
2. The song choice is really effective for me in bridging the gap between how I saw those dynamics (incesty) and the violence reading you explore here. I realise that wasn't intentional, but the song as a really seductive quality. When she croons 'just a little baby', it's both creepy and sexy, somehow. And that makes it even more creepy.
3. Your interweaving of all these characters and the non-linear non-literal interpretation of the lyrics is unbelievably impressive. The fact that the vid's also visually stunning and that all the movement and colour transitions are so well handled as well makes me bright green with envy! ;)
4. It's mesmerising. I can't stop watching it. And I'm sure that won't be good for my nightmares!
5. The whispered sequence from 2.55 on is just wonderful.
6. Matt's wife throwing the phone away at 3.55 gives me shivers every time.
7. The ending--to get back to that 'quit' screen again--has this amazing effect of making the viewer suddenly realise that a clock has been ticking the whole time and while they've been hypnotised by the violence, they've actually been running out of time... it really puts you in the shoes of one of the characters and I think that's why I found it really scary. Also the fact that the answer's 'no'! *shudders* The cycle of inter-generationally engendered violence definitely isn't stopping.

I think I'll go and watch a few more times and come back when my brain has processed more. ;)

Yay, it works!!

What you're describing is what I was picturing when I set out to make the vid. You're describing my goal, to a large extent. So I can't even tell you how cathartic it is to read that. Wow. I'd say that's about as well as any of my vid ideas have come across in a finished state.

So I guess for "speechless," you did pretty well. :) So now I must comment at length with lots of squees.

I'm not sure I can actually respond about this vid without writing actual meta about it.
That's so amazing to read. Thank you! I think this is the first time I've made a vid (aside from maybe Living Dead Girl) that caused people to respond that way. I wanted this one to work on a visual level and on a deeper-reading level, and seeing your reply makes me think... success!

I realise that wasn't intentional, but the song as a really seductive quality
[info]wily_one24 sent me the song more than a year ago along with some of her favorite music, and hearing it again after watching Heroes, it just seemed to click. The show itself is seductive, but in kind of a disturbing way - and with these misleading, paranoid undertones.

interweaving of all these characters and the non-linear non-literal interpretation of the lyrics
That's what made my brain hurt while making it. That and all the drugs I was doing. (Well, mostly caffeine. But a LOT of caffeine.) Your reply makes it all worth it, though.

And I'm sure that won't be good for my nightmares!
I actually had nightmares about my own son while making it.

Matt's wife throwing the phone away at 3.55 gives me shivers every time.
Reading THIS was the big-sigh, I-know-it-worked-now moment. Matt was kind of my secondary deceptive narrative element in the vid - trying to save Molly and Claire from the scary people - and at the end we see that he's abandoned his own child - to potentially the same fate as the others. So that shot was a BIG moment for the vid, and I was almost 100 percent sure absolutely no one would even notice it.

Also the fact that the answer's 'no'!
You got that one too! I thought it applied to each of the characters in the vid in one way or another.

Summing up: *HUG*

The things you do with what looks to be simple transitions is just breath taking. And the shift from color to black/white and then back to color is so seamless I didn't even notice until I was in it. And with such interesting parallels your vids always make me think and see the source in a new context.

The fact that the transitions look simple is, itself, a wonderful compliment. Thanks, [info]sharvie. You know, I'm just being extremely obtuse here, but I think it took me about four or five viewings to really grasp the depth of what's being said here. The first few times, it's just creepy. But halfway through this watch I think the overall horror just hit me, and now I understand why you were having nightmares about the vid.

Some general tech notes first - I love how you address the bumpity-bump of the bassline, and your crossfades are getting slicker than ever. And man, AWESOME transitions. And incredibly skilful cutting.

beginning-0:17 - love how it goes up>left>up>in. Very cool.
0:23 - turny! With crossfades too.
0:26 - shaky!
0:28 - follow-through motion is win
0:30 - that, upon rewatch, is an oooh moment. I think for me that's the first indication of who is actually doing the narrative in this first segment. Creeptastic.
0:41 - "cash on the nightstand". I love the connotations of that clip choice - your parent has left you alone but with some sort of legacy left behind.
0:44 - lifting on the skip beat, carried motion upwards!
0:52 - love the ext. movement on this.
0:55 - like the little transitiony Niki here.
1:17 - light on guitar is lovely.
About this section in particular, I like how you start with Micah and Mohinder (they even look a little alike) and then push back to the damage that their parents inflicted. And in Niki's case, that can be pushed back further.

1:27 - hehe, I love that the watch isn't moving, but the background beat gives a clockwork sound anyway.
1:32 - love that motion on the slide guitar. Ditto Eden shot at 1:33.
1:42 - melty slidy!
1:44 - ha, love how that wall pans across on the melody.
1:50 - Mr B = big black crow. Very cynical and on-target. Like how his smile fades on the slide guitar. Also when Ted pokes head out of door and then pan right to Mr B opening the door.
2:00 - running Mr Muggles! LOVE how he fades into the movement of the clockface. Just seamless.
2:08 - I like this shot because in many ways, the boss man can be seen as a parental figure to Mr B. You're carrying on with the two-tier parental issues instead of just the one. Everything can be traced way back.
2:10 - love the light.
2:12 - that "unveiling" transition is gorgeous.
2:17 - extremely cynical to align Claire's real mother to Sylar!
2:21 - fire transition of AWESOMENESS
I find the Claire/Ted an extremely interesting comparison. Have never thought about it in this light, but I see where you're coming from.

2:41 - this is my favourite shot. The guitar coupled with the movement and tone of the clip is just divine.
I also like the little bit of Hiro in this segment, and how you hardly see his father except for that very telling shot of his eyes in the sword.
2:54 - gorgeous colour transition and light on guitar

I LOVE the next segment. LOVE LOVE LOVE. With Claire as the focal point, Sylar coming at her and Nathan as the shadow father behind her, and then they become interchangeable and then it EXPANDS to a comparison of each of their damage with their own mothers. The symmetry is astounding.
3:00 - oh, gorgeous upward tilt, and then the great shaky push-in.
3:03 - WOW! How did you do that?

Bringing back Niki and Mohinder, I really like how you had doubles of them in both their shots. And then aligning Niki briefly with Sylar, bringing Hiro and Mohinder in to oppose him. Very skilfully woven together. And it's obvious that neither Mohinder nor Hiro are fit for this job; they're being pushed into these roles by their fathers.

(Also an interesting thought occurring to me as to the difference between those with the damage from their mothers, versus the ones with the damage from their fathers.)

3:41 - I hated that shot in the show because it looks so awesome, but the upwards movement is so jilty and not smooth like how I want it in my vids. But you utilised it so perfectly here by slotting it in with the bassline.
3:52 - that shot totally freaks me out. Firstly because she's watching Nathan, then because you followed it with Sylar's dead mother and I feel like the previous clip, in that context, plainly suggests matricide from Nathan's POV.
3:58 - metronome of awesomeness!
4:01 - love how you utlised that time-freeze.
Sylar's dead mother on the floor, Claire's "dead" mother on the floor (from Sylar), then Sylar "dead" on the floor, just an unstoppable chain of causal events. And then the strong Quit?No symbol to tie it up in a neat little bow. CreepTASTIC.

Email me if you want to discuss things in detail! :)

Brad, the more of your vids I watch, the more impressed I am with your very individual style. The main thing that jumped out at me with this particular vid was your grasp of motion and how skillfully you wielded it. You owned it. You see shows in a fresh way and draw connections and parallels I never would have put together. The vid is all kinds of eerie and beautiful and really makes the show look a lot scarier than I remember it being. Thank you so much for putting this together and sharing it with us. Your vids are such a delicious treat--perfect for Halloween *g*

Aw, thanks! Seriously, you're gonna make me blush over here what with all the complimentin'. The best thing is that my "individual style" is apparently not "to suck." As long as I can avoid being that guy.

I hope you don't ever feel like a responsibility to comment whenever I post a vid. Not that I don't love seeing your reaction (this is me loving it!) but the main thing is I just want you to enjoy the vids and say something when and if you feel moved to, you know? But definitely tell me if I start moving toward the new style that sucks.

Your vids are such a delicious treat--perfect for Halloween
Hmm. Suddenly wondering if I can somehow hand out vids at the door. "I got some chocolate." "I got a candy pumpkin." "I got a vid." (/charliebrown)

That might just be the greatest thing I've ever seen. :D
Great editing and use of eerie scenes. Excellent song choice too.
My fave moment is definitely the Sylar/Niki comparison followed by the explosion at 3:26 - 3:29. Brilliant.

Here via a rec from [info]svmadelyn.

This is an absolutely amazing vid from beginning to end. If I have to pick a favourite moment, though, it's the cut from the cheerleader's blood spraying across the "Homecoming" banner to Claire's head cut open by Nathan!Sylar. That made my breath catch.

I deeply appreciate your kind comments about the vid.

I liked playing around with a double meaning for "Homecoming" there. Not sure which way is more gruesome. Boy, I really need to do something light and happy next!

This is just about the most perfect Halloween-vid I've ever seen. You weave everything together in a way that leaves me breathless, all the parallels and threads and metaphors, and the song just adds to the creepiness. The Homecoming-shots are my favorite part of this vid too, as well as the comparison between Angela Petrelli and Sylar's mother. That makes the similarity of Sylar's power and Peter's even more powerful, in my opinion. Overall excellent work.

Also, you might as well consider me as your stalker from now on. I saw Living Dead Girl lately too, and it convinced me that your work is worth following. I promise not to be too creepy.

Creepy is good. I'm a big fan of creepy. More stalking, please! Seriously, I really appreciate it.

The Homecoming segment with the whispered vocals was my first, clearest idea for the vid and the biggest inspiration to do it; so it's really reassuring to see you react that way.

That makes the similarity of Sylar's power and Peter's even more powerful
I didn't use Peter in the vid, but I like to think that he's just off frame and that all of the themes apply also to him. Trying to work him in visually just felt a little redundant, as Nathan filled the same role but with the added paternal aspect.
