Notes
The season had only reached episode 12 when I made my earlier Cara vid Lightning Field, so I had always planned to make one covering the second half of the season. The idea's been kicking around in my head since the end of the series - the song's on a fanmix I did way way back - and mostly I just wanted to go ahead and get it out of my head and onto the screen.

I used quite a lot of secondary source in this, including stock nature documentary footage and some gorgeous art assets from the wonderful DreamScene fair-use graphics community; all in the service of attempting to show the character's POV and emotions onscreen in some way other than a closeup of her face, while trying to stay within the visual style and flow that the song seems to suggest. It still doesn't look entirely the way I initially pictured it in my head while listening to the song, which was kind of like a wistful, surreal dream. They need to develop a USB connection for the brain, cause I have some awesome footage in there.

Cara's journey in the show was one of tragedy, to redemption, to a sort of lonely resolve; and the second half of the season seemed to tease a happy ending for Cara that never really came. For all of her changes, evolution, and inner strength she was, in many ways, right back where she started in terms of being emotionally subservient. So I guess what I found in doing the vid was that I sympathize with Dahlia's motivations; though clearly that was a broken relationship too. Also that we need a season 3 because Cara's story just can't end here.

For those of you who haven't seen Seeker before and have no idea what I'm talking about, um. Hmm. Enjoy the fine BDSM! Did I mention this was kinda sorta made by Disney? And you should watch it.

ETA: A few people asked me about the POV switches in this, so here's the unsubtle version: Verses go Cara-Cara-Cara; Choruses go Dahlia-Dahlia-Kahlan.

Lyrics:

Listen as the wind blows
From across the great divide
Voices trapped in yearning
Memories trapped in time
The night is my companion
And solitude my guide
Would I spend forever here
And not be satisfied

And I would be the one
To hold you down
Kiss you so hard
I'll take your breath away
And after I wipe away the tears
Just close your eyes dear

Through this world I've stumbled
So many times betrayed
Trying to find an honest word
To find the truth enslaved
Oh you speak to me in riddles and
You speak to me in rhymes
My body aches to breathe your breath
You words keep me alive

And I would be the one
To hold you down
Kiss you so hard
I'll take your breath away
And after I wipe away the tears
Just close your eyes dear

Into this night I wander
It's morning that I dread
Another day of knowing of
The path I fear to tread
Oh into the sea of waking dreams
I follow without pride
Nothing stands between us here
And I won't be denied

And I would be the one
To hold you down
Kiss you so hard
I'll take your breath away
And after I'd wipe away the tears
Just close your eyes dear

Thanks for watching. Now can we please have season 3?

First! K, well I adored it. I mean, I love me some Lightning Field so this is an interesting kinda-sequel. I also admire and appreciate how you expressed Cara's emotions, although I would have taken non-stop shots of her face. :P Deej billed this as the grown-up version of their relationship and I totally get that. GORGEOUSNESS all around!
bradcpubradcpu on August 14th, 2012 06:14 pm (UTC)
Aw, thanks for being first. :) Though you're always number 1 to me! (/cheese)

Deej is just way too nice to me, and raises people's expectations in an awesomely terrifying way. It's nice to think I met them for you. I figured regardless of how people at the con and online felt about the show and character, I could at least try to make it pretty for them. Having Cara in it helps.

Oh, damn, that's very...yes.

I did like how you used the chorus to convey that Dahlia believed, or at least was doing a very good job telling herself, that she was working in Cara's best interests while ignoring the fact that 'we had to destroy the village in order to save it' isn't actually in the village's best interest.

Love really is blind. And tied up and beaten until it loves you back, the way it should. Seriously, I do sympathize with Dahlia, but yeah.

Thanks for the lovely comment.

WOW! *stares* This is kind of ... brilliant!
I love the Lightning Field, and to get a new vid after so long is totally awesome.
And: you are very talented. Your choice of shots, the weaving of secundaries into it, the story you tell - oh, and a great choice for that song!!... it´s stunning how it fits all together. I especially loved the editing fro 0.55 to 1.25; Very well done this Cara/Dahlia thing!!!
I can only assume how much work lies behind it! So...Thank you!

Whee!! Thank you so much! It was a lot of work, but it doesn't feel that way because... you know - it's Seeker, and Cara, and Kahlan, and Dahlia!

I deeply appreciate the comments about the structure. I certainly had long enough to think about it. :P Just happy to get it out of my head and onto the screen.

So good.

The use of other resources is actually really clever and effective here, I think. Love the speed changes and the color treatment. Love the whole thing really.

Would you be cool with me linking it on tumblr? I like to link to fanvids that I particularly enjoy the editing in. I have a thing for quality cutting. :)

Thanks so much about the added sources. I really debated what to use, and in what way, and how it would work within the structure and flow. Really really happy to hear that it worked for you.

Would you be cool with me linking it on tumblr?
Sure, I'm flattered! I also put it on tumblr here.

=) Thanks! I tried to heap on the pretty so hopefully people who didn't know the fandom might at least be all "ooh." I'm shameless that way.

This is so beautiful. I'm pretty sure I've said this before, but you're totes my favorite vidder. You vid all the things I love with such pristine awesomeness. And it's always pretty. I can't even say anything about this vid other than how gorgeous it is. It's been awhile since I've watched Seeker, so I don't remember how it goes. I rewatched the first season a couple of months ago, and then just kinda didn't pick up season 2 again. I think I got a little burned out on it, which is sad, because I love season 2 so much better than season 1. Anyway, what I mean to say is that I don't have that complete intertextuality to compare the vid with the original source in my head. Which--I mean, isn't that part of the point? Where a lot of the appreciation comes from? Idk. It's really made me look at Cara/Dahlia's relationship more than just the episode or two it lasted. And it really focuses on that broken trust between the two of them, and that tension for Cara and what she has versus what she wants.

I wanna raid your music library someday. First "Lightning Field" then "The Royal We." I know you'll post my next favorite song soon, lol.
bradcpubradcpu on August 16th, 2012 02:18 am (UTC)
You are so so wonderful, and this comment just... really meant a lot. The words don't even come close to how I feel. Thank you.

I suppose so, but part of it (I think) is also to show how it all looks in the vidder's head, and try to put that onscreen. I maintain that we should have a USB port for our brains. Science has failed me!

Part of what made me want to vid this love triangle was how much of it happened offscreen, in the past, or was implied instead of shown. That kind of stuff is just TOO tempting for vidders.

I'm so glad you like my music choices. :) Possession has certainly been vidded in the past, and vidded well, but when inspiration strikes you just have to go with it.

I am guessing that tackling you in Premieres and flailing in Vid Review did not get across how happy this vid made me, so allow me to try one more time.

Absolutely a favorite vid of the con for me, and I am about to watch it many, many times over again. Especially back to back with Lightning Field. What a terrific duet they are. But more importantly, omg you vidded my id AND IT MADE ME SO HAPPY BRAD.
bradcpubradcpu on August 16th, 2012 02:22 am (UTC)
NEED MOAR TACKLES! Seriously, your reaction to this at the con had me over the moon. I can't even tell you.

I'm guessing that your id and my id probably wear the same clothes, have the same hairstyle, and occassionally Single White Female each other. And I'm VERY MUCH OK WITH THAT.

This was seriously intense, in a good way. The first time I watched it I really missed a lot, unfortunately. Watching it a few more times just makes it clear how incredibly intricate your use of visuals and metaphors/symbols are. I feel like I need to watch this another dozen times, at least, before I can thoroughly piece all of this together. But it was a lovely, devastating look at Cara's arc in the last half of the second season. You convey her innate complexity and conflicts so well, and sympathetically, so the viewers are left aching with her and for her. Just. Wow. Awesome work Brad, awesome.
bradcpubradcpu on August 16th, 2012 02:27 am (UTC)
Yay, I'm so glad you liked it! It's kind of intimidating to know that your expectations are sky high.

The first time I watched it I really missed a lot, unfortunately
That's definitely a good thing! I really wanted to build it in layers and reward rewatches. Unfortunately, it doesn't lend itself well to a con premiere experience, but that was never why I made the vid in the first place.

Late S2 Cara was gorgeous, emotionally intense, sexual, and sadly enigmatic so I tried to make the vid reflect those qualities. Reading your reaction makes me feel like I came close to doing that. Thank you. :)

Brad, I'm simply stunned... I've been waiting A LONG TIME to see this vid, lol, and I'm just blown away by your skill, your love for this character, and the beauty of our dear show that was taken from us too soon!! This is a gorgeous piece of work that invokes the true spirit of the world, characters, and relationships, quite frankly better than the show did. Part of the magic of vids to me is that they can come closer to the version of the show I see in my head (and heart), if that makes sense, and you have totally achieved that here.

Well done, my friend! This was absolutely worth the wait and will now be playing on heavy rotation!! <3
bradcpubradcpu on August 17th, 2012 07:48 pm (UTC)
Ahh! It's just overwhelming to read this. Thank you so so much. I'd make these vids just for you, I really really would.

That's the same reason I vid, to try to show that. Now I'm all mushy. Damn you.

Jeez, Brad. I had no idea what was going on in that vid but it gave me chills anyway. Possession is one of my very favourite songs in the history of ever, so I was skeptical if anyone could do it justice in vid form. I needn't have worried. I am breathtaken. Is that even a word?

You weren't alone - most of the people at the con seemed to feel that way too; but I expected that going in. So it's a real relief to hear that it worked for you anyway.

I am breathtaken. Is that even a word?
It is now! A very flattering word.

Wow, it's really an amazing feeling to read that. I always forget these feelings too until I watch Seeker again. Then I have to vid and get them out. It never seems to be enough, though - so much just won't come out of my head. A lot of the footage only seems to exist in there, sadly. But I'll keep trying! It really means a lot when other people connect with those emotions the way you did here. <3

she could convey fifteen pages of a writer's prose in a side glance or swallow and lip purse
No doubt about that! Cara/Tabrett just begs to be vidded.
