VVC premiere vid musings
Just finished a 6-day "vacation" during which I vidded pretty much non-stop and managed to make it to 93 percent of the timeline on my Vividcon premiere. (Yes, I'm a linear vidder. Sue me.) Hoping to finish tonight, which would be good since this is the last night I'll be able to work on it before the submission deadline.

Last year, laurashapiro and I premiered Hard Sun, and afterward I realized that it doesn't help my mental health to premiere a vid that's so personal to me. So the idea this year was to do something that means nothing to me. :P At least in that sense. There's a little bit of meta, but it's total sillyness and crack for the most part.

A few notes for Future!Brad... Don't make the premieres process harder on yourself by doing the following:

-Picking a song that runs 5:30

-Listening to the song so much before editing that every note becomes part of your concept, and you're then unable to cut it down

-Using a show that has five seasons and four movies, none of which you own

-Picturing all of these elaborate graphics and effects that are vital to the concept, and then starting the vid without having any idea of how to make them, hoping you can somehow figure it out on the fly

-Doing all of that less than a month before VVC deadline

Here are some things that did help, and that you should do again:

-Picking a fandom that's just pure joy to watch and to edit

-Using the type of music and source that you like, audience aside

-Getting really talented graphic artists to help you. Cause you suck at that stuff.

Now that the vid's all coming together, VVC seems so much closer. I can't wait to see all of the work that everyone else has been doing!

I found the perfect gif to reply to your post with. :)

I WANT YOUR PREMIERE NOW. I strongly dislike waiting. :)

*AWKWARD HUG*

Has anyone ever told you that you have perfect gifs?
kiki_miserychickiki_miserychic on June 23rd, 2010 01:22 am (UTC)
I can find a gif that represents any given emotion. Test me.
bradcpu: Bender if you know what I meanbradcpu on June 23rd, 2010 02:57 am (UTC)
Apathy about the fact that you just gave someone an STD.
kiki_miserychickiki_miserychic on June 23rd, 2010 03:21 am (UTC)

Girl in pink gave the STD and is therefore me.
bradcpubradcpu on June 23rd, 2010 04:00 am (UTC)
Mwahahahaha! The facial expressions! Especially from the girl in black!
kiki_miserychickiki_miserychic on June 23rd, 2010 11:21 pm (UTC)
LOL, see there is no emotion that can't be represented in gif.

Linear vidding FTW!
bradcpubradcpu on June 22nd, 2010 03:38 pm (UTC)
Heh, I thought I was the only one. Every time I mention it, then comes the mocking.
kiki_miserychickiki_miserychic on June 23rd, 2010 01:23 am (UTC)
I mock you with my monkey pants.
DC: Death Note - Lightbananainpyjamas on June 22nd, 2010 03:31 pm (UTC)
haha, I love how we moved in opposite directions. I submitted a vid that didn't mean much to me last year and vowed to vid something I actually cared about this year. And hear hear to vidding what you want, audience reaction be damned.

Using a show that has five seasons and four movies, none of which you own

And more seasons soon! lol this is the show that will never die.
bradcpu: Bender if you know what I meanbradcpu on June 22nd, 2010 03:40 pm (UTC)
More seasons starting Thursday. As in, the day before the VVC submission deadline. I'd call that ironic, but then I hear Bender in my head saying "That's not ironic, it's just coincidental!"

Opposite directions ftw! Maybe we'll both enjoy the new tactics better.

You say things like that just to make me cry, don't you?
DC: Battlestar Galactica - Six - Socialatorbananainpyjamas on June 23rd, 2010 01:04 am (UTC)
LOL, sorry, didn't mean to undermine We Are. I can engage with TSCC on an intellectual level, but I'm just not as attached to it as I am to certain other fandoms.

Well, whatever you have planned, I thoroughly look forward to it. Your vids are fantastic. "Hard Sun" was spectacular. I'm freaking obsessed with "Lightning Field."
bradcpu: freaking!!!bradcpu on June 22nd, 2010 05:11 pm (UTC)
Aww, thank you! I really hope you like the new one. It's definitely... different.

Why should anyone mock linear viddage?

Whatever works best, especially when manipulating source, I say go for it.

*hugs*

Re:
Thanks, you! I'm looking forward to seeing you at the con. Hope you like the vid... *fingers crossed*
rhyfeddurhyfeddu on June 22nd, 2010 05:38 pm (UTC)
Your even describing the vidding process sounds like Greek (or Klingon) to me. LOL But I get the gist that this is a big deal and hard work, so congrats to you. Especially if we get to see the results at some point. ;)

Did I miss a mention of what show ("Using a show that has five seasons and four movies") this is based on? Or is it being held back as part of the reveal (ta da!).
rhyfeddurhyfeddu on June 22nd, 2010 05:51 pm (UTC)

Well, duh. I looked around "the room" a bit more and assume now it's about "Firefly", yes?

I saw you had the vid Hard Sun, but since I was totally unfamiliar with the show, I never looked at it, I admit. But I just got curious and damn if you didn't make me cry.

That was an amazingly touching vid. And yeah, I get the whole "feeling bigger" aspect as we go thru our dailies. Your integrating that RL experience into Hard Sun was inspired, but I guess you've heard that before, too. LOL

Well, job well done. I'm gonna check out that show now.
amnisiasamnisias on June 22nd, 2010 06:32 pm (UTC)
Last time I looked Firefly had one season and one movie.
My guess would be Futurama...
rhyfeddurhyfeddu on June 22nd, 2010 07:41 pm (UTC)
You mean I just proved how little I know about Firefly? LOL

Did Futurama have movies tho? Guess we better wait on the final word from the vidder himself. ;)
bradcpubradcpu on June 22nd, 2010 07:46 pm (UTC)
Ding ding ding!
bradcpubradcpu on June 22nd, 2010 07:45 pm (UTC)
Aww, thank you! As I said, it was an intensely personal vid for both Laura and I, as well as for all of the other people who worked on it. It's wonderful that it resonated so well with you.

After the con, I started to question whether it was wise to debut a vid like that at an editing convention, where many people are watching with a more analytical approach as opposed to an emotional one. Simply put, I'm not sure that's the best place to try to make an emotional statement.

So, yes, the new one is Futurama. I hope you like it! I also did a Seeker dance vid that will premiere at the con. They'll both be online the first weekend in August.

Picturing all of these elaborate graphics and effects that are vital to the concept, and then starting the vid without having any idea of how to make them, hoping you can somehow figure it out on the fly
ahahah, I'm so guilty of that one too.

I think it's good when you can have a back and forth between a very intense personnal vid that can be super challenging and something that makes you happy makes vidding more smooth ?

I'm also echoing whitney. want your premiere, like NOW.
bradcpubradcpu on June 23rd, 2010 02:54 am (UTC)
Glad to hear I'm not the only one who tries to figure it out as I go!

There definitely is a time and place for a personal vid, I'm just not sure that time and place is at a convention. Maybe it is, but just not for me?

You totally won't like my premiere.
Laura Shapiro: yay!laurashapiro on June 22nd, 2010 09:01 pm (UTC)
I can't wait to see it! EEEEEEEEE!!!
bradcpubradcpu on June 23rd, 2010 02:55 am (UTC)
Yeah, you won't like it. You won't like the music and the concept isn't really ... very conceptual. It's just a silly little nothing. Maybe you'll get a giggle, but don't expect more than that.
Laura Shapirolaurashapiro on June 23rd, 2010 03:48 am (UTC)
Dude, don't underestimate me. I can do silly. And I like all sorts of music.

If you're having fun with it, and you made it, that's all I need to know.
bradcpu: Futurama LOLbradcpu on June 23rd, 2010 04:07 am (UTC)
"Sensible but not too fast" lulz. That's a surprisingly accurate comparison to this vid. Just picture it 6 mins long and full of lipsync to a novelty hard rock song. :P

*desperately tries to lower your expectations*

I know what you mean, though - I'd feel the same way if you were saying this about one of your vids.

(I'm glad you've found a (relatively) stressfree approach to premieres, Brad--sounds fun!)
bradcpubradcpu on June 27th, 2010 12:52 pm (UTC)
Well, it was mostly stress-free while editing. I'm sure there will still be anxiety at the show. But that's fine because without the anxiety it wouldn't be premieres.

Hey! I'm mostly linear too. Woo woo.

Hard Sun was beautiful and boundary breaking, I ain't gonna lie, but I can see how it might do your head in on a number of levels.

I look forward to the cracky goodness though. :)

I for one am glad I went with a film source (less footage to comb through) and a film I loved and know very well. It made the process so much easier for me. That, and having the vid in my head since December. LOL. Lots of time for the subconscious mind to work on the editing, I guess.
the sundance kid: hardcore / nerdmresundance on June 23rd, 2010 04:21 pm (UTC)
Though, I am highly tempted to wear a paper bag on my head when my vid shows at Premieres. Just sayin'. It's going to be absolutely amazing to see all the vids we're gonna see though.

And I can't wait to see Lightning Field on a big screen. I am having small geek spasms thinking about it. Cuz. And selfishly, I kinda hope obsessive24 submits "All is Full of Love" for Nearly New because it would probably make my year to see that vid on a large screen.
bradcpubradcpu on June 23rd, 2010 06:28 pm (UTC)
You're wise to choose film source. I'll probably do that in the future. Looking forward to the vid!

Yeah, premieres can be nerve wracking, in a totally unexpected way. Thankfully, my vids have always been at the very beginning of the show, which means the torture is brief but intense.

Thanks about Lightning Field! I'm looking forward to seeing it too. Wondering how many people there will be seeing it (and Seeker) for the first time.

Heh. I know that feeling. I swear I just did battle with GarageBand just trying to figure out how to put a freaking sound effect into the wedding video I'm editing together for a friend. And I'm pretty sure I'll have another fight with iDVD when I'm done...but I may not win that one.

Trying to figure things out on the fly sucks.
bradcpubradcpu on June 23rd, 2010 06:30 pm (UTC)
I'm assuming GarageBand is an editing program and you're not describing a boss fight from a video game. I usually just edit audio (poorly) in my video editing program.
cyren_2132cyren_2132 on June 23rd, 2010 09:01 pm (UTC)
Yeah, GarageBand is some sort of Apple music creator/editor thing. I did what little editing to the audio there was (mostly just cutting tracks and adjusting volume) in iMovie, but I needed an effect that is apparently only available in GB, and it took forever to figure out how to export just that sound so I could import it into iMovie.

Your Future Ideas are definitely good. Using only 1:15 of my song made it SO MUCH easier and less stressful. I know now if I decide to use a lot of source/song I should definitely start early and if I can't then don't do it. So much word too to picking fandom that you love to watch and edit!

I can imagine. I'm still trying to figure out why I insist on making it so hard on myself.
